JOIN OUR EXPERT MEETINGS: THE NEXT STEP IN MAKING HEALTH DATA AVAILABLE FOR RESEARCH | In 2020 BBMRI.nl and Health-RI organized expert meetings for data experts from various Dutch organizations to present their methods of sharing health data. A new series of expert meetings will address an important challenge still lying ahead. How do we make data sharing more efficient and easier with a common 'find and request portal' and FAIR data standards? You are invited to join these three online-expert meetings organized by BBMRI.nl and Health-RI. They will be held in Dutch. More information and registration |

BBMRI.nl IN THE SPOTLIGHTS OF NWO | No scientific research can be done without high-quality data and without the right tools. But where can these data and tools be found? And how does an organization supporting this operate? The Dutch NWO magazine ‘Onderzoek’, interviewed Nine Knoers and Tieneke Schaaij-Visser to explain the role of BBMRI.nl. BBMRI.nl-researchers Arfan Ikram and Eline Slagboom describe why big data are so important for their research on Alzheimer’s and aging respectively, and the role of biobanks and BBMRI.nl in generating, sharing and using this data. PATIENT AND PUBLIC ADVISORY COUNCIL ON A ROLL | The Dutch Patient and Public Advisory Council (PPAC) is set up by BBMRI.nl to safeguard the roles, interests, concerns, and needs of patients and the public in biobank research. With the imminent converging of BBMRI.nl into Health-RI, the PPAC will expand its focus beyond biobanking and will include additional elements of the research infrastructure to bridge the gap between professionals and citizens and to ensure that the ideas and concerns of the public are heard. The PPAC recently wrote an article aimed at a lay audience clearly explaining the role of biobanks and why they are of vital importance to everyone. The article is published in the June issue of a magazine for KLM-pensioners with a high print run. The PPAC is now planning a webinar for the general public on the importance of biobanking for everyone’s health. |

DUTCH SCIENTISTS CONTRIBUTING TO COVID-19 HOST GENETICS INITIATIVE | The COVID-19 Host Genetics Initiative recently published an article in Nature titled Mapping the human genetic architecture of COVID-19. This study investigated the host genetic determinants of SARS-CoV-2 infection and severity of the resulting disease. It describes the results of the genome-wide analysis of 50,000 COVID-19 patients and 2 million controls for risk factors for the susceptibility and severity of COVID-19 infections. This paper is the result of a consortium in which 3,400 researchers from 19 countries have participated. Everyone who has contributed to the biobank is registered as author of this article. This publication is a clear example of what is possible when the international research field joins forces in response to emerging health threats. From the Netherlands, the Amsterdam UMC biobank, LifeLines, and the Netherlands Twin register have contributed substantially. |
