In 2019, BBGV received an application to the charity fund from Blue Dragon Children Foundation to renovate a kindergarten in Pu Pien Village (Tuan Giao District, Dien Bien Province). The village is populated entirely by ethnic Hmong people whose income primarily relies on rice cultivation which is vulnerable to natural disasters - 100% has verified card for poor household. The old kindergarten had only one classroom (36m2 in area) and attempted to host a single class of 31 children (aged between 0 and 5), which made it difficult for the two teachers to effectively teach and care for them causing an inability to provide the children the best attention and care possible.
In addition to insufficient teaching space, Pu Pien Kindergarten does not have a kitchen on site. According to the report of Blue Dragon, “Lunches - which costs 8,000 VND each - are made in another school site 9 kilometres away and then delivered to Pu Pien. The school does not have the budget to pay for the daily lunch deliveries, so this expense is covered by the teachers’ own money. The kindergarten teachers use wooden stoves to reheat the food, which is difficult to do when it is rainy or windy. Food hygiene is also a concern”. With the concern for safety and hygiene of these vulnerable children, the BBGV Board Members strongly supported the project to renovate a better school for those 31 children. Using the money raised from our Charity activities, and thanks to good preparation from Blue Dragon’s side, the construction went very smoothly, and the project could be finished right before Tet as a new year gift. Attending the school opening ceremony this morning, Khang Nguyen from BBGV stated “It was a great happiness to see such an incredible project in the effort of emphasise the importance of education in breaking the cycle of poverty. With a new kindergarten, it is not just a safe place for children to study and play, but also a gateway to a more potential future for 31 children for now and in a longer future". The BBGV aims to raise more than 2 billion VND every year to support charitable projects benefiting the Vietnamese people through our fund-raising events. In order to maintain a high standard in this important work on behalf of our members, the BBGV takes a 10% management contribution of funds raised.
