The Advocate's Top Headlines

with Matthew Albright | Assistant metro editor

Hello! We've got a lot going on today. Take a spin through some of our top stories.

More on the end of the Ed Orgeron era

Our sports reporters are bringing you more details and more context about LSU's decision to part ways with head football coach Ed Orgeron at the end of this season.

  • This story gets Coach O's response to the news — he says he had a great run and has no regrets — and looks at the highs and lows of his tenure in Tiger Stadium.
  • This story has details about how Orgeron will receive an almost $17 million buyout.
  • And this story looks at who LSU might pick to replace him.

How a crane crashed into the Sunshine Bridge

Three years ago, a crane on a boat smashed into the Sunshine Bridge, closing it for more than a month. That snarled traffic for thousands of people and cost millions of dollars to repair.

We dug into investigatory documents to see what went wrong. This story explains how the boat crew didn't know the crane was taller than the space beneath the bridge. It also explains how it's still unclear whether the companies involved will face any fines or be forced to pay the state back for the damage.

Controversy over state school leader

COVID testing and mask mandates in schools; testing for younger students; letter grade evaluations for schools: State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley has been at the center of several of these fiery debates in Louisiana. And, in several cases, it has put him at odds with members of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, his bosses.

This story sums up the debates featuring Brumley and what they might mean for our state's schools.

Thanks for reading, and have a great evening!
