Editor: Aschauer, Mario | | BA 9656 | EUR 27.95 | 9790006528141 | Beethoven's "Diabelli Variations", written between 1819 and 1823, mark the pinnacle of his oeuvre for variations and next to Bach's "Goldberg Variations" form one of the most important contributions to this genre. In addition to Beethoven, 50 other composers from Austria, mainly Vienna, followed Diabelli's call to create variations on his famous waltz, among them Czerny, Moscheles, Fr. X. Mozart, Schubert, the 11-year-old Liszt and J. N. Hummel.
The variations first printed by Diabelli fictively as "Fatherlandish Union of Artists Part I" (Beethoven's op. 120) and "Part II" (the 50 variations of Vienna's "most excellent composers and virtuosos") are presented here by Mario Aschauer for the first time in one edition. Furthermore the variations of Part II appear in an Urtext edition for the first time. The musical text is based on a meticulous study of the sources and for the first time relevant discrepancies between the main sources are presented in light grey print.

Pavel Haas was one of Leos Janacek's most gifted students. His String Quartet No. 2 "From the Monkey Mountains" is considered to be one of the first high points of his oeuvre.
In this work, Haas combined elements of Janacek's compositional technique with jazz, particularly in the fourth movement's instrumentation for string quartet and percussion ad libitum. This version was premiered in Brno in 1926; later, the work was revised for string quartet only. For this edition Ondrej Pivoda has reconstructed the original version, bringing to light passages that were never published until now.
This is the first critical edition of the work. It is based on all relevant sources, taking sketches of the final version of the score and contemporary performance material into account. It includes an extensive Foreword (Cz/Eng/Ger) as well as a Critical Commentary (Eng). | | |

| The verismic opera “Pagliacci” by Ruggero Leoncavallo marks the start of Barenreiter's new series “Masterpieces of Italian Opera” (MIO). “Pagliacci” was Leoncavallo's most successful work and to this day it belongs to the core repertoire of opera houses worldwide. The role of the tragic clown Canio has helped many singers to achieve successful performances and iconic interpretations.
This new publication of “Pagliacci” which is edited by Andreas Giger is the first edition to follow clear editorial guidelines, documenting all amendments and editorial decisions in the Critical Commentary. The opera is presented in two versions which, at the time, were both regarded as complete: the version Leoncavallo presented to the Italian publisher Sonzogno (one act, without a “Prologue” and “Intermezzo”) and the “final version” (two acts with a “Prologue” and “Intermezzo”), the conception of which was influenced by Victor Maurel, Sonzogno, as well as the experiences collected during the first series of performances. The new edition adheres to the autograph score of the composer as closely as current opera practice allows, correcting erroneous notes, articulation markings and slurs as well as proposing dynamics marks that were not included in previous editions. Additionally, instrumentation issues have been addressed. | | |

This means you now have the choice: perhaps you prefer a slightly lower-priced and lighter soft-cover edition with excellent lay-flat characteristics or you feel that sturdier hardcover editions of important repertoire works are more likely to survive the rigours of a singer’s life.
Following the publication of Don Giovanni K. 527 (BA 4553-93) and Cosi fan tutte (BA 4606-93) this is now the third vocal score we are publishing in a hardback version. It is based on the respective volume of the ”New Mozart Edition” edited by Daniel Heartz (NMA II/5/11).
This vocal score contains an appendix with markings and amendments for the premiere performance in Munich as well as the 1786 Vienna revision. Suggestions for cadenzas and the embellishment of fermatas in the vocal parts have been rendered as footnotes.

Manfred Trojahn is known for his compositional treatment of texts that reflect “the failure of the artist from various perspectives”. Above all, “Le Ceneri di Gramsci“ by Pier Paolo Pasolini and “Ein Brief“ by Hugo von Hofmannsthal comprise the intellectual foundation of the work, while Trojahn’s eponymous compositions offer the aesthetic and musical-rhetoric backdrop. Trojahn wrote this composition for the Kuss Quartet. This expressive work in three movements is characterized by sharp contrasts that juxtapose polyphonic elements and block-like structures, weaving a tight net of audible motivic connections. | | |

The composer noted: “During my first visit to the Georgenkirche in Rotha, I was impressed by the immensely vibrant and noble sounds of the historic Silbermann organ (1721), the endless variety of possible timbre combinations, the stellar acoustics of the church, and the historic atmosphere, which shaped and tamed my musical thoughts, transporting me into my very own ‘baroque’ world.”
This edition contains registration marks that reflect the soundscape the composer intended to achieve with this particular organ. Performing the work on an organ with different registration possibilities will open up a new spectrum of possible timbres.
