Schubert, Franz | Piano Sonatas II The Middle Sonatas | BARENREITER URTEXT Editor: Litschauer, Walburga | BA 9643 | EUR 31.50 | 9790006539857 | Schubert's piano sonatas written between 1818 and 1825 comprise four completed and five unfinished works. His breakthrough came with the Sonata in C major D 840, known as the "Reliquie", the Sonata in A minor D 845, printed in 1826 entitled "Premiere Grande Sonate" – and as such the first sonata of Schubert that was published – and the Sonata in D major D 850. H. G. Nageli wrote enthusiastically to Czerny a short time later: "I definitely count the piano composer Schubert among the good, even excellent ones". A detailed Foreword on the genesis and source situation as well as in-depth notes on piano playing in Schubert's time (including articulation, the use of pedal, ornamentation) with a special focus on Schubert's characteristic accent notation introduce the sonatas.

Saint-Saens, Camille | Super flumina Babylonis for Soprano Solo, Choir (SATB), Saxophone Quartet, String Orchestra, and Organ | BARENREITER URTEXT Editor: Stahl, Christina M. | BA 11305 | EUR 24.95 | Full score | 9790006567027 | BA 11305-90 | EUR 7.95 | Vocal score (Lat) | 9790006567034 Psalm 137 "Super flumina Babylonis" also known as "By the rivers of Babylon" was an inspiration for many composers including Camille Saint-Saens. He repeatedly occupied himself with his psalm motet for solo soprano, mixed choir, saxophone quartet, string orchestra and organ, originally composed in 1854. Two of the four versions – the first version in Latin and a much later version in English for alto solo, SATB choir and piano – are now available for the first time in Urtext performing editions taking a meticulous account of all the sources. Saint-Saens lived up to his reputation as an innovative composer by exploring the use of the saxophone family in sacred music just a few years after the invention of these instruments. The successful combination of voice and saxophone creates a special sound experience.

Szathmary, Zsigmond | Mosaikbilder for Piano | Dedicated to Zoltan Kocsis
| BA 11471 | EUR 24.95 | 9790006574759 | The powerful intensity of colour and expressiveness of the mosaic images in the apse and altar area of the late antique church of San Vitale (from the 6th century) in Ravenna made a lasting impression on Zsigmond Szathmary. The fascination of how imposing images emerge from tiny, luminous mosaic cubes and vividly tell the biblical stories inspired the composer to write his piano piece: "In my composition, I tried to follow this path: to organise the smallest coloured and angular glass cubes – that is, the smallest coloured and angular musical miniature events – in such a way that they constantly grow and finally culminate in a tangible musical statement." Despite this seemingly archaic procedure, the composer wants his piece to be understood as a continuation of the virtuoso piano music tradition of the 19th and 20th centuries. The "Mosaikbilder" (Mosaic Pictures) are dedicated to the great Hungarian pianist Zsoltan Kocsis, for whom they were written in 2012. | |

Furrer, Beat | melodie for Flute Solo
BA 11448 | EUR 15.95 | 9790006574094 | "melodie" was commissioned for the ARD Music Competition as the compulsory piece for the semifinals in 2022. It is dedicated to the Austrian flautist Eva Furrer, with whom Beat Furrer works closely and who has been his advisor on flute techniques for decades. The intensive study of the instrument's possibilities is also audible in "melodie". It is a virtuoso piece and demands the full spectrum of playing technique and expression from the flautist. A variety of special playing techniques poses particular challenges: abstract sounds, changes in air flow, different vocal colorations, extreme registers, and multiphonics. The work is notated in two independent systems, one for articulation and one for fingerings. After a beginning of abstract sounds, the tone pitches become more and more defined. A section of fast, nervous figures is followed by a long, quarter-tone coloured melody, which gave the piece its name and which is heard about halfway through the approximately eight-minute piece.

Gluck, Christoph Willibald | Ballet Music | Christoph Willibald Gluck. Complete Edition II/3 Editor: Brandenburg, Irene | BA 5822-01 | EUR 398.00 | Full score, linen-bound | 9790006567454 | Reduced subscription price available | To conclude Series II (Dance Dramas) from the Gluck Complete Edition, this volume of Christoph Willibald Gluck's earliest contributions to the genre comprises six ballet scores from 1759 ("La Promenade", "Les Jardiniers", "Les Turcs", "Les Savoiards", "Les Amours de Flore et Zephire", and "Le Suisse") as well as the ballet music for "Les Vendanges", which dates from 1761. These works belong to the compositions also called "Krumau ballets" because of their musical transmission – which Gluck created in Vienna between 1759 and 1765 for the court theatres in Laxenburg and Schonbrunn as well as the Karntnertortheater, and which are to be attributed to him as a ballet composer around the middle of the 18th century in Viennese theatre life based on the considerations presented in the general preface. ...

Handel, George Frideric | Semele HWV 58 | Halle Handel Edition I/19,1+2 Editor: Risinger, Mark | BA 4025-01 | EUR 640.00 | Full score, linen-bound | 2 volumes | 9790006443222 | Reduced subscription price available | Handel's "Semele", which premiered in February 1744, is based on an adapted version of William Congreve's opera libretto titled "The Story of Semele", originally published in 1706. However, neither Handel nor his librettist referred to "Semele" as an opera or an oratorio, which, according to the understanding at the time, would have required a biblical and/or Christian subject matter. Contemporary audiences also disagreed on the genre. The problematic classification as an oratorio has persisted into the present day, likely due to the edition labeled as such by Chrysander. The "Halle Handel Edition" distances itself from this classification and, considering the available sources, refrains from assigning a genre label. ...

Bärenreiter would be nothing without conductors, instrumentalists and singers who bring our music to life all over the world. We are immensely grateful for their companionship, their enthusiasm and for their feedback. During our entire anniversary year we will be raising the curtain for our Bärenreiter Jubilee Ambassadors and presenting selected Ambassadors in our newsletters. |
Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Conductor
Founder and artistic director of the Monteverdi Choir, English Baroque Soloists and Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique „My association with Bärenrenreiter-Verlag stretches all the way back to 1957 when as a treble I sang in the Springhead Ring choir in a concert given in Wilhelmshöhe, Kassel, with works by William Byrd and Heinrich Schütz. My father Rolf was a close friend of its founder, Karl Vötterle, and he brought him to Cambridge in 1964 (or 5?) where I was then an undergraduate. Herr Vötterle courteously asked me which composer in my opinion was most in need of an Urtext edition at the time. Without hesitation I replied Hector Berlioz. I was then able to introduce him to my friend, the Berlioz expert, Hugh Macdonald – and the rest is history. As a professional conductor over sixty years I have found Bärenreiter Urtext scores to be indispensable in terms of scholarship, and always beautifully edited and presented whether it be works by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Dvořák or Elgar, all of which I have used in performances and recordings. Bärenreiter is the gold standard.“ |
