This year, the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven was to be celebrated in great style. Most of these plans were upset by the COVID-19 crisis, many concerts and festivals had to be cancelled.

Editor: Brown, Clive | | BA 10937 | EUR 12.50 | 9790006568505 | In May of 1802, the "Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung" praised the violin sonatas op. 23 and 24 as being "... among the best Beethoven has written, which is to say that they are among the best being written at all. The composer's original, fiery and bold spirit ...becomes more and more apparent now ..."
The time during which Beethoven composed his "Spring Sonata" was marked by a frantic surge of compositional creativity. "I live only in my notes, and with one work barely finished, the other is already started; the way I write now I often find myself working on three, four things at the same time.", he wrote in a letter to Wegeler on 29 June 1801. However during this time, Beethoven also suffered from the rapid deterioration of his hearing, a fact he was still trying to hide and that the enchanting "Spring Sonata" which was to become increasingly popular in the course of the 19th century certainly does not divulge.
Clive Brown's ground-breaking new edition combines a scholarly Urtext approach with the provision of a wealth of information on historical performing practice, all conveniently united in one practical edition. This edition consists of a score and two individual parts for the violin: an Urtext part based on the scholarly-critical assessment of all sources, and an annotated part with additional information by Clive Brown based on important topics of historical techniques and practices.
In addition to a detailed preface this edition includes information on early editions of this sonata as well as historical metronome markings.
This edition is based on Clive Brown's edition of Beethoven's complete sonatas for violin and pianoforte published by Barenreiter (BA 9014, BA 9015, BA 9036).
The Performing Practice Commentary (Eng) by Clive Brown and Neal Peres Da Costa provides information on performing practice for each Sonata and each movement in this volume. It discusses techniques of both violin and piano playing in Beethoven's period, as well as historical contexts and advice on phrasing and technique based on the evaluation of historical editions (e.g. by Czerny, Ferdinand David, Alard, Diemer, Grutzmacher, Reinecke, Brodsky, Joachim, Rose, Halir, Kreisler).

Editor: Brown, Clive | | BA 10938 | EUR 18.95 | 9790006568512 | An autograph fragment of the Violin Sonata op. 47 is titled, in Beethoven's hand, "Sonata mulattica composta per il mulatto Brischdauer, gran pazzo e compositore mulattico" – meaning "Mulatto Sonata composed for the mulatto Brischdauer, great madman and mulatto composer". The genesis of the sonata, which was to become famous under the name "Kreutzer Sonata", is closely connected to a visit to Vienna by George Augustus Polgreen Bridgetower (1778 – 1860), a violinist with an Afro-Caribbean father and a European mother. In the language of that time, his descent made him a mulatto.
Beethoven was apparently deeply impressed by Bridgetower's musicality and virtuosic abilities. However, when the sonata was published in 1805, he dedicated it to Rodolphe Kreutzer under the title "Sonata per il Pianoforte ed uno violino obligato in uno stile molto concertante come d'un concerto". The work "in the style of a concerto" is probably Beethoven's most demanding violin sonata and since the 19th century has formed part of the core repertoire of the great violin virtuosos.

This means that you have the choice: perhaps you prefer a lower-priced and slightly lighter soft-cover edition with excellent lay-flat characteristics or you feel that sturdier hardcover editions of important repertoire works are more likely to survive the rigours of a musician’s life.
Mozart’s last two operas, "The Magic Flute" and "La clemenza di Tito", are not only remarkable for their outstanding quality but also for the astonishingly short period of time Mozart needed to write them: From the first sketches and drafts to the completed scores Mozart put on paper approximately 800 pages of music between April and September of 1791, a six month period. |

This special occasion brought together not only the highest representatives of aristocracy in Frankfurt, but also close to 25,000 visitors resided in that city which was about to offer a spectacle of considerable magnitude. You had to participate if you wanted to draw attention to yourself in high society.
Wolfgang Amade Mozart was also one of the visitors. On 28 September 1790, the composer told his wife about his journey from Vienna to Frankfurt which took six days. The cities of Regensburg, Nurnberg and Wurzburg belonged to the places where he stopped over. The lively descriptions render an authentic insight into the biography of Mozart in his later years. |

Also published for the first time is the original 1881 version of the "Messe de pecheurs".
The genesis of the "Messe de l'association des pecheurs", which was composed in Villerville (Normandy) in collaboration with Faure's friend Andre Messager, is the central theme of the introductory text. In addition, Helga Schauerte-Maubouet focuses on the relationship between the characteristics of the choir organ at the church of La Madeleine as well as the composition and performance practice aspects of the motets. A first in this edition is the inclusion of the double bass part in the scores of some of these works. Although this part does not consequently appear in the musical text of the first editions of these motets, it is substantiated by the autographs from the Madeleine church archives. Its integration makes it possible to restore the practice that was common in this church during Faure's lifetime. By means of many other details, the new readings of the complete edition finally offer a reliable musical text of jewels such as the "Cantique de Jean Racine". |

In Gade's understanding "Zion" forms "a kind of trilogy" together with the cantatas "Kalanus" and "The Crusader" which centres around the "longing for the true light". The focus of "Zion" is the history of the Jewish people where a people has received a promise. This is described in Gade's words in the following sections: a) Introduction – The Departure from Egypt b) The Captivity in Babylon c) The Return "Prophecy of the New Jerusalem". |
