Dear musicians
We are pleased to present a new addition to our cello study publications: “Capriccios and Exercises for the Violoncello op. 15” by Robert Lindley.
Lindley became the first professor of cello at the Royal Academy of Music in 1822 and taught there until he retired in 1851. It is in his capacity as teacher that he published the “Capriccios” in 1926. They offer cellists a variety of fingering patterns in related major and minor keys, thumb-position octaves and tenths as well as a wealth of double-stop passages, all within a melodious frame-work. These studies constitute outstanding material for use in lessons.
In addition to the standard etudes of Bohemian cellist and composer David Popper, the Bärenreiter catalogue includes many of the other best-known and instructive cello studies by composers such as Jean-Louis Duport, Felix Battanchon, Friedrich Grützmacher and Sebastian Lee. All these works have their own pedagogical value and give great satisfaction when they are mastered.
The Bärenreiter cello study editions have a clear, reader-friendly layout. They contain fingering and bowing for today's cellists, optimal page turns and fold-out pages where players need them. In short: they aim to provide cellists with everything that enables them to successfully practice and study these works.

In 1822 he became the first professor of cello at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he remained until his retirement in 1851. Lindley, an esteemed and much sought-after teacher, wrote not only the present Capriccios but also a cello method, several concertos, and chamber music in which the cello is prominently featured.
The Capriccios and Exercises contain a multitude of fingering patterns in related major and minor harmonies, exercises for the thumb position and many passages of double stops, all within a melodious framework. Barenreiters scholarly performing edition is edited by Valerie Walden, offering cellists and teachers outstanding new material for use in lessons.

| Grützmacher, Friedrich | | Technology of Violoncello Playing op. 38 | | Performance score | Editor(s): Rummel, Martin | | BA 6997 | EUR 29,95 | 9790006531929 | The German cellist Friedrich Grützmacher (1832-1903), an influential teacher and composer, wrote two important works containing studies: Tägliche Übungen (Daily Exercises) op. 67 and Twenty-four Etudes op. 38.
Grützmacher was greatly admired during the 19th century for his brilliant playing technique and this forms the central part of his studies op. 38. To this day the twenty-four studies form an integral part of cellist's study repertoire and the development of a well-grounded cello technique.
As with Martin Rummel's editions of Popper's studies and the Duport Etudes, the new Grützmacher publication contains a booklet with valuable tips and references to other works in the cello repertoire requiring similiar solutions to technical problems.

First of all Rummel has modernized the fingerings and bowings to reflect cello playing today. He has also restored the order of the etudes as Duport originally had them and furthermore the ad libitum 2nd cello has been brought back to life; the new edition offers the 2nd cello in a separate score included in the edition.
As with the already popular Popper Etudes (BA 6978 and BA 6979), the Duport edition also includes a brochure with comments on the etudes and with references to their usage in the standard cello literature.

The op. 11 etudes dedicated to Schubert have remained a classic of violoncello instruction through to today.
The editor Martin Rummel has based his new edition of the op. 11 etudes on the first edition published by the Viennese company Haslinger .
The editor has sparingly added fingerings, bow strokes and slurs indicating them editorially so players can immediately see the textural alterations.

Very little research has been carried out into his biographical details, but it is known that he composed around 40 works. By far the majority of his compositions are salon pieces for one to three cellos, but Battanchon also wrote several collections of studies.
The 12 Etudes in the Thumb Position are now available in a new edition by Martin Rummel. They are suitable both as an introduction to playing in the thumb position as well as an advanced study of this aspect of cello playing.
