Beethoven, Ludwig van | Sonata for Pianoforte and Horn or Violoncello in F major op. 17 | BARENREITER URTEXT Editor: Del Mar, Jonathan | BA 10939 | EUR 16.95 | Score with parts | 9790006568918 | Beethoven wrote his Horn Sonata op. 17 for Johann Wenzel, one of the most famous horn players of his day. According to an anecdote from Beethoven's pupil Ferdinand Ries, he only completed it on the day before the premiere. Nevertheless, the piece was a rousing success. As the horn part demands a masterly technique, the publisher of the first print, Tranquillo Mollo et Comp., issued the piece in 1801 with an alternative part for violoncello. Since the autograph score has not survived, Jonathan Del Mar has based his scholarly-critical edition mainly on this first print. Misha Donat provides an informative Foreword on the work's history and genesis (Eng/Ger) and the edition is rounded off by a Critical Commentary (Eng) with a complete description of the sources as well as a page in facsimile.

Beethoven, Ludwig van | An die ferne Geliebte for Voice and Piano op. 98 | BARENREITER URTEXT Editor: Cooper, Barry | BA 7862 | EUR 11.95 | 9790006566976 | "My angel, my all, my self". With these words Beethoven, in July 1812, began his passionate love letter to a woman whose identity has eluded discovery to the present day. Was he perhaps addressing the same woman four years later when he composed "An die ferne Geliebte", his song cycle on poems by Alois Jeitteles? Barry Cooper discusses this and many other questions in the Introduction to his new edition of Beethoven's only song cycle. Not only does he present a meticulously edited musical text, he also delves into questions of performance practice that previous critical editions have overlooked.

Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Felix | Lobgesang / Hymn of Praise op. 52 MWV A 18 A Symphony-Cantata after Texts from the Holy Scriptures | BARENREITER URTEXT Editor: Cooper, John Michael | BA 9092 | EUR 89.00 | Full score | 9790006565795 | BA 9092-90 | EUR 13.50 | Vocal score (Ger/Eng) | 9790006565801 Mendelssohn's contemporaries frequently mentioned his "Hymn of Praise" in the same breath as Beethoven's Ninth – and often enough viewed it as an imitation. Mendelssohn authority John Michael Cooper, in his extensive Introduction to this new Urtext edition, shows that the comparison is completely unfounded: with this work Mendelssohn created a new genre to which he gave the name "symphony-cantata". Drawing on all relevant sources, Cooper provides a detailed account of the genesis and structure of this monumental work. Rounding off his scholarly performing edition are notes on the work's performance, e.g. tempo, articulation and dynamics. For the first time the piano reduction includes Mendelssohn's authorised version of the "Sinfonia", based on the first edition of No. 1 for piano solo. | BA 9092-91 | Choral score | EUR 5.95 | Minimum order quantity: 10 copies |

Wonderful tunes such as "A Lovely Lass" and "The Foggy Dew" have been arranged by Speckert for two violins, viola and cello. In all pieces the viola can be replaced by a third violin. "Fiddle Tunes" forms part of the "Easy String Ensemble" series.

Alain, Jehan | Complete Organ Works | BARENREITER URTEXT Editor: Schauerte-Maubouet, Helga | BA 8428 | EUR 35.95 | Volume I |Works published or intended for publication during the composer's lifetime | 9790006507078 | BA 8429 | EUR 35.95 | Volume II | Posthumous Works: fantasias, short dances and marginalia | 9790006507085 BA 8430 | EUR 35.95 | Volume III | Posthumous Works: Suite, Intermezzo, Trois danses | 9790006539659 Due to copyright restrictions, these volumes were not available to Italian customers up until 31 December 2019. Jehan Alain, a pupil of Marcel Dupre, came from a family of musicians near Paris. His works display literary influences as well as the influence of Gregorian chant, early music, impressionism, jazz, non-European rhythms and tonal systems. His treatment of the organ, almost chamber music-like, shows a stylistic departure from the romantic-orchestral type of organ composition. This is accompanied by a change of direction to an idealised sound which combines elements of French classicism and romanticism in a new kind of synthesis. Not only the interpretation, but also a proper analysis of Alain's organ works has been difficult until now because of the lack of a critical edition. For the first time this three-volume scholarly-critical Urtext edition of the complete organ works fills this gap. The editor is an internationally recognised scholar and interpreter of Alain's organ works.

Vierne - 150th Anniversary Year |
|
The French organist and composer Louis Vierne (1870-1937) studied privately with Cesar Franck. He deputised for Charles Marie Widor at St. Sulpice (Paris) from 1892 onwards, before being appointed titulaire organist at Notre Dame (Paris) in 1900. Vierne held this position until his death. He became well-known outside of France due to numerous concert tours throughout Europe and the USA. Famous students included Nadia Boulanger and Maurice Durufle. Vierne’s organ works are undisputed masterpieces of organ music and form an integral part of the virtuoso organ repertoire. This year we are celebrating his 150th anniversary year.
