| IMPORTANT | | | Take That! | Europe Agrees To Ban Most Russian Oil After weeks of fevered negotiations, the 27 EU members have imposed an immediate embargo on Russian oil delivered by tankers. Hungary said its economy couldn’t handle a total ban and insisted that oil delivered by pipeline be exempt. “This immediately covers more than two-thirds of oil imports from Russia, cutting a huge source of financing for its war machine,” tweeted Charles Michel, president of the European Council. “Maximum pressure on Russia to end the war.” The measure is the harshest imposed on Russia since it invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, but it could also constitute a major sacrifice for Europe. | | ‘Extremely Complicated’ | Russia Makes Gains in Luhansk Fighting in Sievierodonetsk, in eastern Ukraine, is too intense to allow civilian evacuations, with Moscow claiming it controls a third of the city. If Sievierodonetsk and nearby Lysychansk fall, the entire Luhansk region will be controlled by Russia. “Unfortunately, the front line has cut the city into two halves, but … the city is still Ukrainian,” said mayor Oleksandr Stryuk. The U.K.’s ministry of defense tweeted that “Russia has achieved greater local successes than earlier in the campaign by massing forces and fires in a relatively small area. This forces Russia to accept risk elsewhere in occupied territory.” (Sources: The Guardian, BBC) |

| | Showing Us How It’s Done | Canada Introduces Law To Ban Handgun Sales, Limit Magazines At a news conference Monday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the draft legislation, which would allow exceptions for elite sport shooters, Olympic athletes and security guards and would not apply to Canadians who already own handguns. “We need only look south of the border to know that if we do not take action firmly and rapidly it gets worse and worse and gets more difficult to counter,” he said, referring to last week’s school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. Trudeau’s Liberal Party has a parliamentary minority, but the legislation could pass with votes from the left-leaning New Democrats. (Source: Reuters) |

| | Gotta Do What You Gotta Do | Meet the Democrats Voting in GOP Primaries To Block Trump Picks Analysis of early voting records in Georgia found that 37,144 people who cast ballots in Democratic primaries in 2020 voted in last week’s Republican primary. While so-called crossover voting is nothing new, this is an unusually high number. “I feel strongly that … people who are holding up the big lie, as we call it, and holding onto the former president are dangerous to democracy,” said Diane Murray, a lifelong Democrat who voted for Brad Raffensperger in last week’s Republican primary. “I don’t know I’ll do it again because of how I felt afterward. I just felt icky,” she added. (Source: AP) |

| | INTRIGUING | | ‘Ghost of an Orca’ | Ailing and Disorientated Orca Dies in Seine River A 13-foot killer whale that became separated from its pod and swam dozens of miles up France’s most famous river has died of natural causes. The animal appeared to be suffering from mucormycosis, or black fungus, a disease that’s never been observed in European whales. On Saturday, scientists tried to lure the whale back out to sea using a drone emitting orca sounds, but it responded incoherently and erratically. By Monday, it was merely “a ghost of an orca,” said Lamya Essemlali of Sea Shepherd France. Mucormycosis can spread from the skin of weakened animals to the heart, lungs and brain. | | | Solve For XX | Why Do So Few Women Win Math Prizes? This one’s a real head-scratcher. Since its inauguration in 1936, the Fields Medal, the most prestigious prize in math, has had only one female winner: Stanford University’s Maryam Mirzakhani in 2014. In recent decades, math departments have been becoming more diverse and more women are earning Ph.D.s than ever before — but the top prizes are still going almost exclusively to men. “When it comes to the final selection, women are often seen as ‘not quite enough’,” said Kathryn Leonard, president of the Association for Women in Mathematics. “All of this is magnified several times over for women of color,” she added. | | House Hunting? | Two Remarkable European Properties Go Under the Hammer Which will it be? An 1848 country house that Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi called home for 50 years or a 16th-century French chateau with four pointy towers torn from the pages of a fairy tale? After a lengthy quarrel between the La Traviata composer’s heirs, Villa Verdi, in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna region, is finally being sold. The Italian government has the right of first refusal and the family hopes it doesn’t “just become a cold museum.” Meanwhile, the 14-bedroom Renaissance-style Château de Saint-Elix, near Toulouse, is being auctioned by the French government — and the reserve price is a decidedly affordable $800,000. | | ‘Think of the Earth!’ | Man Disguised as Old Woman Throws Cake at ‘Mona Lisa’ Let her eat cake. A 36-year-old man in a wig and lipstick, who arrived at the Louvre Museum in a wheelchair, has been sent to a police psychiatric unit after throwing a piece of cake at the glass protecting Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece. “Think of the Earth! There are people who are destroying the Earth! Think about it. Artists tell you: think of the Earth. That’s why I did this,” he called out as guards led him away. Since a 1950s acid attack, the painting has been kept behind safety glass, which was called into action in a 2009 teacup attack. (Source: AP) |

| | Gone Too Soon | Cardinals’ Jeff Gladney Dies in Car Crash The 25-year-old cornerback was one of two people killed in the accident in Dallas early Monday morning. The former TCU star was a first-round pick for the Minnesota Vikings in 2020, appearing in all 16 games in his rookie season. He was charged with felony domestic violence for allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend, and was released from his contract in August 2021. In March, a jury unanimously found him not guilty and the Cardinals snapped him up. “Lost my Brother, my best friend, my right hand man … ain’t too much more I can take man damn!” tweeted former TCU teammate Jalen Reagor.
