Hungary said its economy couldn’t handle a total ban and insisted that oil delivered by pipeline be exempt. “This immediately covers more than two-thirds of oil imports from Russia, cutting a huge source of financing for its war machine,” tweeted Charles Michel, president of the European Council. “Maximum pressure on Russia to end the war.” The measure is the harshest imposed on Russia since it invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, but it could also constitute a major sacrifice for Europe. | | | ‘Ghost of an Orca’ | Ailing and Disorientated Orca Dies in Seine River A 13-foot killer whale that became separated from its pod and swam dozens of miles up France’s most famous river has died of natural causes. The animal appeared to be suffering from mucormycosis, or black fungus, a disease that’s never been observed in European whales. On Saturday, scientists tried to lure the whale back out to sea using a drone emitting orca sounds, but it responded incoherently and erratically. By Monday, it was merely “a ghost of an orca,” said Lamya Essemlali of Sea Shepherd France. Mucormycosis can spread from the skin of weakened animals to the heart, lungs and brain. The former TCU star was a first-round pick for the Minnesota Vikings in 2020, appearing in all 16 games in his rookie season. He was charged with felony domestic violence for allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend, and was released from his contract in August 2021.
