Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Bret Baier

Fox News’ Bret Baier responded to a statement from former President Donald Trump going after him, and fact-checked his claims about the election results in Arizona.

Over the weekend Trump continued pushing his usual false claims about the 2020 election and attacked Fox ;— Baier in particular — in a statement that referenced in part the network’s call of Arizona for Joe Biden.

Baier addressed the statement from the former president and looked at the specific claims he made.

For example, Baier said, “Former President Trump says 74,000 mail-in ballots were received that never mailed. That claim appears to be based on data that does not show the total mail-in vote and does not reflect the total early vote either, something acknowledged by the third party audit itself.”

He went through more of the claims Trump made to fact-check them such as the Trump claim that the Maricopa county election server was "hacked during the election."

Baier debunked that and continued on, defending the network's reporting and calling out Trump.

Trump still wields political power, and it's important for the press to hold those with power to account.

MEDIA LOSER:
White House Press Corps

The White House press corps had multiple opportunities on Monday to ask President Joe Biden if he would raise the issue of a terrorist wanted by the United States that Jordan is harboring.

Ahead of Jordanian King Abdullah II’s meeting on Monday at the White House, the press failed to ask Biden, following his remarks about the current state of the economy, about Ahlam Tamimi, who was behind the 2001 Sbarro pizzeria bombing in Jerusalem that killed 15 civilians, including two Americans, and injured approximately 122 others, including four Americans.

Tamimi was serving 16 life sentences in Israel when she was released as part of a deal Israel made with Hamas in exchange for captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. Now living in Jordan, Tamimi is treated like a celebrity.

The White House press corps failed to even ask White House press secretary Jen Psaki ahead of the meeting whether Biden would press the king to extradite Tamimi, whose indictment by the United States was unsealed in 2017.

No one even shouted a question following-up about Tamimi.

Again, it's important for the press to hold those with power to account.

The A-Block

‘You Do Not Know What You Are Talking About’

Dr. Anthony Fauci faced off with Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) during a Tuesday Senate hearing that witnessed Paul threatening Fauci with imprisonment for “lying” to Congress — over Fauci’s dismayed protestations.

The exchange took place during a hearing of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee on the issue of whether the National Institutes of Health funded gain-of-function research — which aims to make viruses more infectious  — in the Wuhan Institute of Virology. A May 24 story in The Wall Street Journal noted the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases — which Fauci heads — did indeed provide a research grant related to the research.

“Dr. Fauci, as you are aware, it is a crime to lie to Congress,” Paul said as he kicked off his questions for Fauci, emphasizing that federal law makes lying to Congress a felony punishable by up to five years in prison. “On your last trip to our committee on May 11, you stated that the NIH has not ever and does not now fund gain of function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology,” he added. Citing research that was conducted in the Wuhan lab and asking that a copy of the WSJ article be given to Fauci, Paul asked, “Knowing it is a crime to lie to congress, do you wish to retract your statement?”

Fauci replied, “I have never lied before the Congress, and I do not retract that statement.” He also said the research in question “was judged by qualified staff up and down the chain as not being gain-of-function.”

Paul attempted to interject, leading Fauci to respond, “Let me finish!”

The epic clash continued from there.

'You’ll Never Eat It Again'

New York Mets play-by-play voice Gary Cohen, hilariously humiliated the city of Cincinnati on Monday, roasting them over a "local delicacy” that he found far less than appealing.

Cohen describes the fare from Skyline Chili in excruciating detail topped with shredded disdain, and notes sarcastically aghast that, "this is supposed to be food that you actually eat.”

As he goes through the diatribe there are visuals on screen.

It's kind of amazing.
