Redistricting: Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost’s office said Thursday the Ohio Redistricting Commission blew a hard Sept. 1 deadline to introduce proposed new state legislative maps and that action harmed Ohioans. Andrew Tobias reports Yost's office wouldn't go so far as to call the Commission's actions unconstitutional, but he was more forceful in a lawsuit earlier this year against President Biden's administration demanding U.S. Census data to meet the deadline. Unlike with the Census lawsuit, Yost's office is not getting involved legally with the commission.
HB6: Federal prosecutors said Thursday that they have given defense attorneys most of the evidence against former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder in the state’s largest public corruption case. John Caniglia reports a trial could begin next spring or summer.
Eviction help: Judges should connect tenants and landlords with federal coronavirus relief funds for past-due rent, which could help prevent evictions, Ohio Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor said Thursday. Laura Hancock reports the federal money has been distributed to community nonprofits across the state.
This Week in the CLE: Gov. Mike DeWine and other state officials have violated the state Constitution by failing to provide the public with a look at their proposed new state legislative maps before a Wednesday deadline. We’re talking about what comes next on This Week in the CLE, cleveland.com’s daily half-hour news podcast. COVID cases: The number of new daily coronavirus cases continues to rise rapidly in Ohio, with 7,087 on Thursday - over double the number from two weeks ago. Just a week ago, there were 5,395 new coronavirus cases. On Thursday, Aug. 19, there were 3,446 new cases, reports Laura Hancock.
COVID in schools: The Cincinnati Public School district again reported the most new COVID-19 infections among Ohio school districts in the latest weekly report from the state’s Department of Health. Alexis Oatman lists the districts in Ohio that are reporting the highest number of coronavirus cases.
Lawsuit ruling: A federal appellate court has sided with a retired Cleveland fire battalion chief who sued the city over allegations that officials retaliated against him for bringing to light a former chief’s training issues. The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday dismissed the claim of Edward Eckart, a former assistant safety director in Cleveland, who had argued he was entitled to immunity from being sued for First Amendment retaliation, John Caniglia reports.
Mills trial: Cuyahoga County’s former sheriff testified Thursday that he tried to raise concerns about deteriorating conditions inside the county jail and the performance of ex-jail director Ken Mills to numerous public officials, including County Executive Armond Budish, before eight inmates died in a six-month span in 2018. Former Sheriff Clifford Pinkney also testified that he felt powerless to reign in Mills, who he technically oversaw, because Mills frequently circumvented the sheriff to work directly with Budish and members of Budish’s cabinet, Cory Shaffer reports.
Deadly holiday: Labor Day is the second-deadliest holiday for drivers, with drunken driving contributing to many of those fatal crashes, Olivia Mitchell reports. Last year in Ohio there were 13 fatal crashes that resulted in 15 deaths over Labor Day weekend, according to statistics from the State Highway Patrol.
Lake Erie smell: A strong odor noticed throughout Lake County on Thursday is coming from Lake Erie, Cameron Fields reports. The cities of Eastlake, Mentor-on-the-Lake and Willowick received at least 60 calls regarding the smell on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
Concert postponed: Organizers have announced the Highway 77 Music Festival has been postponed over increasing Covid concerns. Anne Nickoloff reports that Hall of Fame Resort & Entertainment Co. has moved the festival, which was scheduled to take place Sunday, Sept. 12, to summer 2022.
Amusement park camping: If you’re craving a secluded, nature-filled getaway, this isn’t it. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a convenient place to park your camper, ride coasters and entertain your kids, you may want to check out Kings Island’s new camping resort, reports Susan Glaser.
Cashless: By next spring, all Cedar Fair parks, including Cedar Point, are expected to go cashless, reports Susan Glaser.
Sandra Oh: Sandra Oh takes us through her legendary career, including her roles in “Diary of Evelyn Lau,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Killing Eve” for cleveland.com’s sister site, Vanity Fair.
Things to do: Before you know it, the leaves will be changing, the temperatures a bit cooler and everything at the grocery store will be made with pumpkin. But don’t let that happen without having one last burst of summer fun. Joey Morona and Annie Nickoloff list 30 things to do, including the Cleveland National Air Show, Cleveland Oktoberfest, Geauga County Fair, Hungarian Festival and more.
