Welcome back, LSU fans. It's a new week but sort of a tweener week for LSU sports. The rapid fire news from SEC Media Days is in the rearview mirror, but the start of LSU's preseason camp is still more than a week off. Still, we have a few must-read items for you, starting with a much-deserved statue for one of LSU's all-time greats: PETE MARAVICH LSU held a ceremony Monday evening to unveil a new statue for Pete Maravich on the north side of his arena — the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The PMAC was named for Maravich shortly after his death in 1988, but it took 34 years for him to get a statue, the fifth for an LSU sports great. In my column I tell you why that is, take you to the ceremony and tell you who is the next LSU great to get a statue. TRACK AND FIELD If you haven't seen former LSU pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis' world-record leap at the World Championships on Sunday in Eugene, Oregon, get thee to YouTube (after you read today's newsletter, of course). Check out Mondo's celebration here. Current Tiger Alia Armstrong, who also just competed at worlds, has been named recipient of the James J. Corbett Award, given to the state's top female athlete. BOOK EXCERPT LSU never had a player quite like Devin White. Part horseman, part tackling machine, White may be the best linebacker the Tigers have ever had. That's it for now. As always, thanks for reading and have a great day! Scott Rabalais |
