Good afternoon! It's Wednesday, July 13, and today's headlines include a United Nations report on the global population, the arrest of six pro-life advocates in Virginia, and details on a highway crash in Illinois that resulted in the deaths of a pastor's two daughters and sister.
A new report from the United Nations shows that the world's population is on pace to reach 8 billion by Nov. 15. India is projected to surpass China as the world's most populous country by 2023. The annual World Population Prospect report also projects the global population will increase by another half a billion by 2030 and reach 10.4 billion by 2100. The growth is expected to be unevenly distributed, with more than half of the 2.4 billion projected increase over the next 28 years concentrated in eight countries: The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and the United Republic of Tanzania.
The global fertility rate has fallen from five births per woman in 1950 to 2.3 births per woman in 2021. The fertility rate is expected to dip even further to 2.1 births per woman by 2050. Meanwhile, the share of the global population aged 65 years or above is expected to rise from 10% in 2022 to 16% in 2050. Read more.

Pastor Scott Broughton of First Baptist Church of Carlyle in Illinois and his wife, Amanda, lost their two teenage daughters and Broughton's sister in a car crash along Old U.S. Highway 50 on Friday. The trio was traveling in a 2005 Audi passenger vehicle at the time of the accident. The pastor's 15-year-old daughter, who had a learner's permit, was driving. Clinton County Sheriff Dan Travous said eyewitness reports and evidence from the scene suggest the vehicle crossed into the westbound lane on Highway 50 near Harper Street in Beckemeyer and caused a head-on collision with a Volvo tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer driver suffered minor injuries. Read more.
Six pro-life activists, primarily representing the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising, a group of liberal pro-life activists, were jailed on trespassing charges Tuesday after pleading "no contest" at an Alexandria, Va., courthouse. The PAAU's media coordinator, Caroline Smith, told The Christian Post that the Pink Rose Rescue conducted by the activists at the Alexandria Women's Centered resulted in five women deciding not to have abortions. Smith vowed that the legal consequences faced by the leadership of PAAU and other pro-life advocates would not deter the organization from engaging in Pink Rose Rescues in the future, saying, "We understand that with doing these types of nonviolent direct action, there's going to be these sorts of consequences the way our system works right now. However, we're still committed to doing these types of things and doing rescue and any of these children have a right to be rescued is what we firmly believe." Read more.

In this op-ed, Wallace B. Henley shares why churches must view the political realm as a place of mission and ministry. Henley outlines six lessons he learned during his time as a presidential aide and political candidate, explaining that before diving into "the whale and shark-infested waters" like Jonah, it's important that churches understand who they are—ambassadors of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20). Dr. Mark W. Hendrickson discusses President Biden's announcement outlining new Environmental Protection Agency rules increasing the amount of corn-based ethanol blended into motor fuels, asserting that "[d]iverting massive amounts of food from stomachs to gas tanks will jack up food inflation even more." With millions of Americans suffering due to inflation and even hundreds of millions more around the world at risk of starvation or severe undernourishment, "the EPA’s ethanol policy is a moral obscenity," Hendrickson states. I don’t know what’s more disheartening–the anger of many because Roe v. Wade was overturned or the silent pastors and worship leaders who say nothing?

Watchmen or Cowards

Over the last few decades, Americans have seen the destruction of the institution of marriage, the removal of God’s Word in several areas, and the embracing of CRT.
Many pulpits are also silent about governmental abuse, the LGBTQ agenda, and the blatant murdering of millions of babies. This is an indictment against America and Christian leaders are partially responsible–our silence speaks volumes. Are we watchmen or cowards? Read More

In an interview with The Christian Post, Jor-El Godsey, president of Heartbeat International, an affiliation group with a worldwide network of more than 3,000 pro-life pregnancy centers, asserted the abortion industry addresses pregnancy "from a profiteering perspective while we're trying to do so from a service perspective." Godsey's comments came following Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., claiming that pro-life pregnancy centers rely on deception to prevent women from obtaining abortions. Warren recently introduced the Stop Anti-Abortion Disinformation Act, or H.R. 8210, which purports that abortion is "an essential component of reproductive health care." The bill would "direct the Federal Trade Commission to prescribe rules prohibiting disinformation in the advertising of abortion services, and for other purposes." With all of the 3,000 pro-life pregnancy centers associated with Heartbeat International offering women free services, Godsey contends H.R. 8210's assertion that the "freedom to decide whether and when to have a child" is "key to the ability of an individual to participate fully in our democracy" cuts women short, explaining, "We vehemently disagree with the idea that women have to have abortions in order to be successful. They're more powerful than that; they've been the cradle of motherhood for millennia." Read more.
