To coincide with the publication of the first complete catalogue raisonné of Riberas drawings the Museo del Prado is presenting an exhibition that aims to reveal the variety of Riberas drawings, his technical skill and the remarkable originality of his subject matter. MADRID.- The Museo del Prado is inaugurating Ribera. Master of Drawing, an exhibition co-organised with the Meadows Museum, which will be presented in Dallas from March next year in a reflection of this outstanding and highly productive collaboration between the two museums. Curated by Gabriele Finaldi (former Associate Director of Conservation and Research at the Museo del Prado and now Director of the National Gallery in London), the exhibition has been organised to mark the publication of the first catalogue raisonné of the artists drawings. The aim of this publication is to offer a complete vision of Ribera as a draughtsman and to catalogue all the known drawings by his hand (around 160). It marks a new high point of interest in this subject, which began in the early 20th century and has been p ... More |
The Best Photos of the Day A member of the Iraqi Christian forces Kataeb Babylon (Babylon Brigades), wearing a bandana with an inscription saying "Here I am, O Mary", stands guard carrying a Kalashnikov assault rifle by the statue of the Virgin Mary, damaged and decapitated by the Islamic State group (IS), in the Mar Benham Syriac Catholic monastery in the town of Khidr Ilyas, southeast of Mosul, on November 22, 2016. Iraqi fighters battling to oust the Islamic State group from Mosul captured the Catholic Mar Benham monastery on November 20, allowing its priests to return. Murillo's "Virgin and Child in Glory" leaves the Walker Art Gallery for the first time since it was acquired in 1953 | | Anders Wahlstedt Fine Art exhibits photographs of the New York art world by Christophe Von Hohenberg | | Further findings from Maidstone Museum's mummy scan | Murillos painted altarpiece, Virgin and Child in Glory (1673), has left the Walker Art Gallery. LIVERPOOL.- The iconic work has travelled to the Walker Art Gallerys conservation studio where it will undergo major technical investigation work, funded by the Art Fund. This will be the first detailed conservation treatment to be carried out on the altarpiece since the early 1860s. The history of the altarpiece is an undeniably dramatic one. It was originally commissioned by the Archbishop of Seville (1670-1684), Ambrosio Ignacio SpÃnola y Guzmán, to form the centrepiece of a private chapel in his palace. The central section of the altarpiece was cut out and a copy was inserted, probably in the late 18th century. By the early 19th century, the central fragment was in the possession of a retired linen draper in London, while the rest of the altarpiece was looted by a French general and taken to Paris. In 1862, the works were reunited under the ownership of Lord Overstone, a trustee of the National Gallery, who arranged ... More | | Christophe Von Hohenberg, Irving Blum, ca. 1985 (detail). Gelatin silver print. Ed. 1/10, 10 in. x 8 in. Signed on recto. NEW YORK, NY.- Anders Wahlstedt Fine Art is presenting an exhibition of black and white photography by Christophe Von Hohenberg. The exhibition celebrates the artists photographs capturing the movers and shakers of the 1980s New York art scene. Another Planet: Photographs of the New York Art World is a remarkable window into a gloriously decadent and abundantly creative time in the history of New York City, captured by a fixture on the scene. Von Hohenberg photographed many of the key players of the New York art world of the 1980s and 1990s with his characteristic élan and keen eye for composition. On view are gelatin silver prints of artists such as Robert Mapplethorpe and Peter Beard. Exhibited alongside are images of legendary dealers including Leo Castelli, the godfather of the contemporary art world, and Tony Shafrazi, its resident enfant ... More | | In addition to the scan of Ta-Kush, the team at Maidstone Museum was provided with the opportunity to scan a number of other items from the Ancient Civilisation gallery, scans which ultimately delivered astounding findings. MAIDSTONE.- The recent CT scan of Maidstone Museums mummy Ta-Kush at the Kent Institute of Medicine and Surgery (KIMS Hospital) has already revealed myriad fascinating findings, but further scans on other objects within the museums Ancient Civilisations gallery have provided equally impressive insights into the collection. The initial results of Ta-Kushs scan were remarkable, said Samantha Harris, Collections Manager at Maidstone Museum. Not only did we find evidence of fully erupted wisdom teeth to help us identify that her age was probably much higher than was first thought, but also that there was evidence of a wedge fracture in one of her vertebrae a symptom of patients suffering a downward impact such as a fall. These findings as well as others ... More |

The World of the Samurai: The Rudolf Ott Collection gets a rapturous ovation in Hermann Historica's 73rd auction | | Taschen announces the first major publication of Sebastião Salgado's Kuwaiti oil wells series | | Gary Nader Art Centre to host auction benefiting Nader Art Museum Latin America | The Collection Rudolf Ott The World of the Samurai: Arm, Armour, Work of Art. Total: 306 Lots. MUNICH.- All specialist areas represented by Hermann Historica reported excellent results, with some lots multiplying their estimated price many times over. In total, almost 6,500 collectors' items came under the hammer. Even during the run-up to the 73rd auction, the unique collection of approximately 300 objects from the fields of Japanese art and weaponry amassed by Rudolf Ott (1919 - 2010), a chemist in Munich, had attracted a great deal of interest around the world. The justifiably high expectations were not disappointed in any way and the auction concluded with a sales quota of almost 100%; overall, the collection achieved tremendous final prices, with some objects fetching up to more than sixty times the opening bid. Sensational artefacts, like a jizai okimono from the Meiji period (1868 - 1912), fashioned of hammered and engraved sheet iron plates in the shape of a fully articulated koi carp, triggered bidding skirmishes tha ... NEW YORK, NY.- In January and February 1991, as the United Statesled coalition drove Iraqi forces out of Kuwait, Saddam Husseins troops retaliated with an inferno. At some 700 oil wells and an unspecified number of oil-filled low-lying areas they ignited vast, raging fires, creating one of the worst environmental disasters in living memory. As the desperate efforts to contain and extinguish the conflagration progressed, Sebastião Salgado traveled to Kuwait to witness the crisis firsthand. The conditions were excruciating. The heat was so vicious that Salgados smallest lens warped. A journalist and another photographer were killed when a slick ignited as they crossed it. Sticking close to the firefighters, and with characteristic sensitivity to both human and envrionmental impact, Salgado captured the terrifying ... More | | Fernando Botero, Homenaje a Bonnard, 1971. LOS ANGELES, CA.- The visible also always conveys the invisible. All the more so in the cheerful world of consumerism, in which we live today. The more perfect its surfaces, the more its opposites also seem to resonate the suppressed and the absurd. No painter has understood this better than Andreas Schulze. The Cologne based artist, who has been associated with the gallery since 1983 and a professor at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf since 2008, examines the most mundane objects from his personal surroundings. He arranges trompe loeil peas or geraniums in humorous tableaus, and places sofas, plastic windows, or Mars bars in the spotlight, gleefully distorting fundamental forms that today are usually the realm of architecture and abstract painting. Once again, the festival showed art at its finest, with this year's motto Seeking Beauty serving as a fascinating point of departure. VIENNA ART WEEK boasted over 200 events from around 90 program partners, drawing a considerable crowd of art-interested guests and experts from all over Austria and around the world. A first highlight came at the start of the week with the multi-hour performative interview marathon Seeking Beauty, held in the Columned Main Hall at the MAK. French artist ORLAN surprised attendees with an artistic intervention after her lecture; the afternoon line-up included a series of high-caliber lectures and performances by artist and philosopher Elisabeth von Samsonow, performer Doris Uhlich, and curator Mark Evans from the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Choreographed by interior designer Manfredi della Gherardesca, the exhibition brings together almost 30 works by both artists, including Claude Lalanne's latest creations. Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne met in Paris in 1952 and began working and exploring the natural world together through sculpture. Their early days together were marked by interactions with the thriving community of artists in Montparnasse, not least François-Xavier's early neighbour Constantin Brâncuși who inspired his transition from painting to sculpture. Nepal's quake-damaged Boudhanath stupa reopens | | Michael Rosenfeld Gallery to represent William T. Williams | | Exhibition of works by Francis Alÿs opens at Vienna's Secession | The Boudhanath Stupa on its reopening day following its renovation for earthquake damage. PRAKASH MATHEMA / AFP. KATHMANDU (AFP).- Nepal's newly restored Boudhanath stupa reopened to the public Tuesday after it was damaged by the deadly 2015 earthquake that left much of the country's cultural heritage in ruins. The white-domed golden stupa -- the country's largest and one of the holiest sites of pilgrimage in Tibetan Buddhism -- was left with deep cracks after the powerful 7.8-magnitude quake hit in April last year, devastating the Himalayan nation and killing nearly 9,000 people. Restoration work began in May 2015 and cost $2.1 million -- including over 30 kilogrammes (66 pounds) of gold -- according to the Boudhanath Area Development Committee. To mark the opening, which took place after a three-day purification ritual, colourful prayer flags and flowers covered the stupa and monks chanted prayers. "This is a proud moment for us... The successful reconstruction of Boudhanath is an inspiration for what we have to achieve in quake affected areas," Prime Minister Pushpa ... More | | William T. NEW YORK, NY.- Michael Rosenfeld Gallery announces its representation of William T. Williams (American, b.1942), whose long career has produced a singular body of abstract work. As longstanding admirers of his work, Michael Rosenfeld Gallery is honored to be the first gallery since the 1970s to represent this important American artist. The gallery is currently planning a solo exhibition of his work to open in March 2017, which will be accompanied by a fully illustrated color catalogue. In December at Art Basel Miami Beach, his work will be highlighted in the gallerys presentation of jazz and improvisation in American 20/21 century art; four major paintings and a selection of works on paper spanning 1974 to 2015 will be on view. William T. Williams work ranges in style from his early geometric abstractions, to almost-monochromatic explorations of texture, to an abstraction that derives its force from productive tension among colors ... Courtesy the artist and Galerie Peter Kilchmann, Zurich. VIENNA.- Francis Alÿs is known for his discreet performative solo actions as well as for coordinating large-scale collective allegorical events. Many of these performancesboth ones in which the artist features as a protagonist and the mass actions in which Alÿs himself stays on the sidelinesare now revered as classics of the genre. In Re-enactments (Mexico City, 2000), Alÿs ambled through the city holding a loaded gun until a policeman stopped him; he then persuaded the officer to repeat the entire action and record it on videohence the title Re-enactments. Record, 1978-1990 offers the presentation of Zofia Rydets monumental photographic project Sociological Record. The artist began the development of the cycle in 1978 and continued almost until her death in 1997. Rydet began working on the cycle at an advanced age (when she was sixty-seven years old) as an established artist with a considerable exhibition portfolio. At the same time she occupied a separate position in the Polish photographic milieu, dominated at the time by male photographers and conceptual tendencies. Sociological Record abounds in contradictions rather than a cycle of research or inventory photography (as the title, originally provided by Urszula Czartoryska suggests), it is a total project that sits within the tradition of intuitive artistic atlases and catalogues. Hence the title of the exhibition, which omits the ... José Clemente Orozco (November 23, 1883 - September 7, 1949) was a Mexican social realist painter, who specialized in bold murals that established the Mexican Mural Renaissance together with murals by Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and others. Orozco was the most complex of the Mexican muralists, fond of the theme of human suffering, but less realistic and more fascinated by machines than Rivera. Mostly influenced by Symbolism, he was also a genre painter and lithographer.
