PARIS (AFP).- Auguste Rodin's white marble sculpture of the mythical Ethiopian princess "Andromede" fetched nearly 3.7 million euros ($4.1 million) at a Paris auction Tuesday, well above the top estimated price of 1.2 million euros. The rediscovered masterpiece -- created in 1886-1887 and depicting the daughter of Ethiopian King Cepheus nude and asleep on a rock -- was sold by the Artcurial auction house just as Paris is marking the centenary of Rodin's death. An exhibit of more than 200 of his works and those of artists he influenced is showing at the Grand Palais in the French capital until the end of July. In 1888, Rodin presented the work to Carlos Morla Vicuna, a Chilean diplomat living in Paris at the time, as a gift, said Bruno Jaubert, Artcurial's director of the impressionist and modern art department. LONDON.- On 6 July 2017, Christies will offer The Maria Fitzherbert Jewel in The Exceptional Sale as part of Christies Classic Week. The gold locket, which contains a portrait miniature of King George IV by the celebrated artist Richard Cosway, is one half of a pair. The other locket contained an image of the Kings secret and illegal wife, Maria Fitzherbert and was worn by the King on his deathbed, before being buried with him at Windsor Castle. SYDNEY.- An Emily Kngwarreye painting owned by Sir Elton John and his husband David Furnish will lead Bonhams auction of Important Australian and Aboriginal Art in Sydney on June 6. The impressive work, which is almost four metres wide, has been in the collection of Sir Elton and Mr Furnish for two decades and was featured in a major touring exhibition almost a decade ago. My Country, 1993 depicts the abundant summer flora of Kngwarreyes traditional lands at Alhalker, on the north-western edge of Utopia, with the vivid yellows, ochres and pinks representing the blossoms, seeds and pencil yams of the artists birthplace. NEW YORK, NY.- The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture at The New York Public Library today announced the acquisition of American tenor saxophonist and jazz legend Sonny Rollins personal archive. The robust collection includes more than 150 linear feet of material that document Rollins life and career from the 1950s to the present. This acquisition also marks the Harlem natives return to the neighborhood of his youth. Rollins was profoundly influenced and inspired by the sights and sounds of the Harlem Renaissance and its pioneers, including Duke Ellington and Louis Jordan, who shaped modern music and Rollins creative life. The earliest statue is a Northern Wei (386-535AD) stone Bodhisattva in an unusual seated asana with crossed ankles and hands in mudras fear not and charity. FRANKFURT.- Carolee Schneemann (b. 1939), who in May 2017 was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale, went down in art history as a pioneer of performance art. Voyage presents the history of Greek seafaring in the Aegean and the Mediterranean from prehistoric times to the middle of the 20th century. NEW YORK, NY.- Swann Galleries May 25 auction of Graphic Design offered a cornucopia of inspired design spanning fin de siècle Art Nouveau masters to psychedelic concert posters. The top lot of the sale was Col Van Heusen, 1928, one of the most elegant, Cubist-style designs created by Charles Loupot. The strikingly colored work, which was intended to advertise mens collars, displays some of the richest inking seen in the artists work; it sold for $50,000*, far exceeding its pre-sale high estimate of $30,000. Works by Loupot performed well overall, with several claiming places in the top lots. The top performing piece in the Fine Chinese Ceramics Sale, which made HK$68,177,500 (US$8,750,000) overall, was the exceptionally rare pair of Imperial blue and white 'Bajixiang' moonflasks, bianhu, Qianlong seal marks and of the period.
