Exhibition of drawings and watercolors by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner opens at Galerie St. Etienne | | Major Rubens-discovery leads Auctioneers Bernaerts' sale of Old Master Paintings in Antwerp | | One of Liotard's last oil paintings in private hands to be auctioned at Sotheby's London | Dodo with Japanese Umbrella, 1909. Lithograph in five colors. 15" x 12 3/4" (38.1 x 32.4 cm). The only known impression in these colors. Private collection. NEW YORK, NY.- Galerie St. Etienne presents Ernst Ludwig Kirchner: Watercolors and Drawings from the Robert Lehman Collection, an exhibition including 30 never-before-seen sketches by the great German Expressionist, from March 29 through July 1, 2016. Until recently, Lehmans Kirchner drawings had been on extended loan to The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The late collector purchased the works in 1959 as a group from a German dealer who obtained them from the artists estate. The exhibition explores the relationship between Kirchners sketches and his other work, presenting more than 50 pieces that span nearly his entire career, from 1906 through his Swiss exile in the 1930s. Also on view will be a selection of larger Kirchner drawings and a number of rare woodcuts, lithographs and etchings. Because Kirchner insisted on doing his own printing, most of his editions are extremely small, and some of the exhibited prints ... More | | This image is found in paper from the mill in Fabriano, Italy, dated 1598 and was first identified by Uwe Westfehling in 2001. ANTWERP.- This large double-sided pen and brush drawing with variations of a turbaned rider on a bucking horse trying to fend off enemies was recently discovered in an Antwerp private collection. Drawn freely with a medium size brush it shows no underdrawing in chalk or charcoal. The composition looks spontaneous, possibly to be used in another work of art or perhaps to capture a specific movement of a horse and rider to remember. An old annotation at the bottom of the recto attributes the study to Anthony van Dyck (15991641). Neither Van Dyck, A Complete Catalogue of the Paintings, by Susan J. Barnes et al. (2004) nor Horst Veys Die Zeichnungen Anton van Dycks (1962) include images of men and horses in battle; the subject does not occur in his surviving oeuvre in which portraits and figural compositions predominate. Furthermore, the brown of the ink of the brushwork is closer to that found in drawings by Rubens. Another detail that points to Rubens is the distinct watermark ... LONDON.- Hot on the heels of the Scottish National Gallery and Royal Academy of Arts exhibitions which revealed the genius of Jean-Etienne Liotard (1702-1798) to a wider audience, Sothebys London will offer a rare work by the Swiss master whose pastel portraits caught the imagination of his contemporaries, from Europe to the Levant. A highlight of the recent show at the Royal Academy of Arts, A Dutch Girl at Breakfast has not appeared on the market for almost 250 years. It is one of the rare oil paintings by the celebrated artist, and the only genre scene of an interior he painted in oils to remain in private hands. Probably painted in Holland in 1755-56, the work was bought in the artists sale in London in 1774 by his long standing friend and patron, William Ponsonby, 2nd Earl of Bessborough who played a decisive role in the artists life and career. This magnificent painting remained in the possession of the descenda ... More |

LONDON.- A 400-year-old drawing by Paolo Veronese is at risk of being exported from the UK unless a buyer can be found to match the asking price of £15,400,000 (plus VAT of £154,000). To provide an opportunity to keep it in the UK, Culture Minister Ed Vaizey has placed a temporary export bar on Venice Triumphant. The work is a preparatory drawing for one of Veroneses most famous paintings, Apotheosis of Venice. Following two disastrous fires in 1574 and 1577 at the Doges Palace, the Venetian government commissioned Veronese and several other local artists to redecorate the Palace. The finished painting, completed around 1582, occupies one of three large ceiling compartments in the Sala del Maggior Consiglio, the Palaces most important state room. There are only three existing drawings related to the commission to redecorate the Palace and Venice Triumphant is the largest and also the most important of the only two surviving prep ... LONDON.- White Cube Bermondsey is presenting Moneybags, an exhibition of new work by New York based artist Sergej Jensen. Since the early 2000s, Jensen has regularly included cloth bank bags in his work, which he sews together to make geometric paintings. Moneybags is the first exhibition to focus on this motif within Jensens mode of production, and will also include new representational works that use bank bags as their painterly ground. Jensens approach to painting is unconventional in that it can frequently involve a complete rejection of paint itself in favour of textiles found or worn materials that reflect a history of use. In this series, Jensen limits himself to one type of basic material which is uniform in style but differs in colour, weave and size. Obtained from federal and municipal banks in Europe and the USA, the bags are occasionally branded with either the name of the bank or their ... More | | Banksy (British, 1974), NOLA, 2009. Musée d'art contemporain de Bordeaux opens major Judy Chicago retrospective | | Extraordinary Schlumberger for Tiffany & Co. Dolphin brooch at Heritage Auctions New York | | New book explores relationship between surrealist pioneer and cancer pioneer | Through the Flower © Judy Chicago, 1973 Sprayed acrylic on canvas 60 x 60 in. (152.4 x 152.4 cm) Photo © Donald Woodman. BORDEAUX.- The exhibition Why Not Judy Chicago? is a visual narrative made up of a selection of works and documents providing an overview of the more than 50 years of production by this pioneer of feminist art. By looking at the close relationship between her work as an artist, an art educator and a writer, the exhibition proposes a holistic approach to her career as much as it retains - with the intention of transforming it- the different elements of the structure of the institution of art. Judy Chicago belongs to the first generation of women who created a feminist art practice and theory within what - in the America - is called Second Wave feminism. This generation questions any inherited knowledge as it perpetuates male domination. In this political, social, intellectual and artistic context, where Chicagos career is conceived around notions of deficit and disobedience, her outright rejection of patriarchal ... More Jennifer Bartlett's "The Mind in Action: Early Drawings and Plates, 1968-1975" on view at Locks Gallery PHILADELPHIA, PA.- Locks Gallery is presenting an exhibition of early grid drawings and plates by Jennifer Bartlett, on view from March 23rd through April 30, 2016. The Mind in Action: Early Drawings and Plates, 1968-1975 is a survey of the seminal, pre-Rhapsody grid drawings and steel plate paintings that became Bartletts trademark. The serial, systems-based constructions of dots and grids allowed for near-infinite possibilities for the artist to explore. Throughout her career, Bartletts work has resisted easy categorization. The early, investigative works in this exhibition relate to Minimalism and Conceptual Art while also quietly transgressing the rules that defined other works of this era. Akin to the process of her mentor Sol LeWitt, Bartletts plate paintings were created by following specific directions set forth by the artist herself. However, unlike LeWitt whose ... More Russia artist charged with damaging 'cultural site' for FSB door fire MOSCOW (AFP).- Russian investigators have altered the charge against a performance artist for torching the door of the FSB security service's headquarters from vandalism to "damaging a cultural heritage site," his lawyer said Tuesday. Pyotr Pavlensky will still face up to three years in jail under the new charge, lawyer Dmitry Dinze told AFP. "The maximum sentence does not change." The 32-year-old artist was detained in November after setting fire to the wooden door of the FSB's Moscow headquarters -- the infamous Lubyanka building that used to house the Soviet-era KGB -- in a performance called "Threat" to protest against state "terrorism" by the security services. He was initially charged with "ideologically-motivated" vandalism, which also carries a maximum three-year jail sentence. The exhibition Press Here for Some Counterculture, running 1st April thru 15th May, sees the artist playfully embrace the attitude of the anti-establishment while being equally wary of how easily it's coopted, manufactured and mass produced. More Exhibition of works by Jana Sterbak on view at Barbara Gross Galerie, Munich MUNICH.- Jana Sterbak has been known since the 1980s for her conceptual objects, performances, photographs, and installations, in which she translates complex ideas into trenchant images. At the heart of her work are humans, with all of their diverse emotions and tense relationships to society and their own beings. Sterbak deals with existential themes through cryptic humor, subversively and with occasionally disturbing effects. K-tee has long used weaponry in her work, and in this show she takes the distinctive American army MK II hand grenade, known colloquially as the pineapple, to create a series of small and medium scale sculptures. The first series is comprised of four grenades molded in plastic. Each of these appears to have been bitten into, and reveals a soft centre filling fondant egg, honeycomb, Turkish delight and caramel. The artist was first drawn to the idea after a friend who collects replica weapons showed her a decommissioned grenade, which she felt looked like something you might eat. The second series are the same grenades, but larger scale and bisected, which hang on the walls. Says K-tee: I love the engineering aspect of weapons in general ... they are deadly and nasty objects but not ... | href=' Flashback On a day like today, Spanish painter Francisco Goya was born March 30, 1746. Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (30 March 1746 - 16 April 1828) was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker regarded both as the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns. Goya was a court painter to the Spanish Crown, and through his works was both a commentator on and chronicler of his era. The subversive imaginative element in his art, as well as his bold handling of paint, provided a model for the work of later generations of artists, notably Manet, Picasso and Francis Bacon.
