An Egyptian decorated sarcophagus case made for Psammetique, son of Seba Rekhyt, is displayed as part of the 'Serve the Gods of Egypt' exhibition showing at the Museum of Grenoble, southern eastern France. Based on the Grenoble collections and supplemented by 200 works from the Louvre Museum and others loaned by European museums, the exhibition offers an approach to Theban society during the Third Intermediate Period (1069-664 BC), around the temple of Karnak, the main place of worship of the god Amon. JEAN-PIERRE CLATOT / AFP. GRENOBLE.- The Musée de Grenoble is presenting an exhibition-cum-event devoted to ancient Egypt, organized with the Louvre. It proposes an archaeological plunge into the powerful city of Thebes 3000 years ago, by way of its necropolis and the monumental temple of Amun. Relying on the Grenoble collection, complemented by almost 200 works from the Musée du Louvre and other loans from European museums, the exhibition introduces visitors to the intimate life of Theban society in the Third Intermediate Period (1069 664 BCE). That society paying allegiance to the deity Amun-Ra in the temple at Karnak found itself, for those 500 years, at the heart of major political and economic challenges. In particular, the exhibition emphasizes the important role played by women at that time. A novel subject especially devised for Grenoble. ... More |

Photo: Petar Miloević. ROME (AFP).- The Uffizi Gallery in Florence on Tuesday appealed to Berlin for help in retrieving a stolen 18th century Dutch painting from a German family. "An appeal to Germany for 2019: We wish that the famous 'Vase of Flowers' by Dutch painter Jan van Huysum that was stolen by Nazi soldiers be returned to the Uffizi Gallery," the museum's German director Eike Schmidt said. According to Schmidt, the oil painting is "currently held by a German family who, after all this time, has still not returned it to the museum despite many requests by the Italian state." Before it was stolen during World War II, the still-life, which measures 47x35 cm (18x14 inches), was part of a collection owned by another well-known Florence museum, the Palazzo Pitti. After being shipped to Germany the work's whereabouts remained unknown until 1991, after Germany was reunified, Schmidt said. ... More Exhibitions coincide with the publication of Mistral: The Legendary Wind of Provence by Rachel Cobb SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- Over the past forty years, photographer Rachel Cobb has regularly visited and, at times, lived in Provence, where she experienced firsthand what it is like to endure the mistral, the fierce wind that funnels down the Rhône Valley, occasionally gusting to hurricane strength. No one who spends time in the region can escape it. It is everywhere, yet always unseen. Photographing the impact of this relentless force of nature on life in Provence has been Cobb's mission for the last fifteen years. As she became sensitive to the rhythms and effects of the mistral, she realized it was not just a weather phenomenon, it was an integral part of the fabric of Provençal life, impacting its architecture, agriculture, landscape and culture. Houses have few or no windows on the northwest, windward side and the main entrance on the southern, sheltered side. ... With THE TICK, Arnell plays with a horror scenario in which blood sucking ticks have taken over the world. They want to infect all humans with viruses.
