The museum said Tuesday that the "caterpillar" escalator as well as the sloping stone plaza in front of the iconic structure were closed to the public Tuesday for work expected to last until September 2020. As a result, the centre's three million annual visitors will have to use an entrance around back, usually reserved for the vast public library that forms part of the inside-out complex. Glossy color-print on alu-dibond, wood, framed. Photo: Matthias Kolb and Courtesy Contemporary Fine Arts. BERLIN.- Contemporary Fine Arts is presenting Ferragosto, Edgar Leciejewskis first exhibition with the gallery. Fire is an ambiguous phenomenon. It represents both destruction and renewal. In the Middle Ages, fire was a medium of punishment and purification. It stood as a kind of limbo, marking the boundary between the total bliss of paradise and the eternal damnation of hell. In many cultures, it is worshipped as something divine. In China, it is typical to burn bundles of cash termed Hell Money to provide for relatives in the afterlife and to honor the gods. Something of this magical or transformative power of fire burns in Edgar Leciejewski's Fabric Images. Here, still life forms, assemblage and portraits move across each other like projected slides. Fire gives and takes, Leciejewski points out. In fire, one sees everything. The ... More | | Anish Kapoor, Untitled (detail). | More News | Patricia Piccinini's 'Life Clings Closest' opens at Cairns Art Gallery CAIRNS CITY.- Patricia Piccinini opened a new solo exhibition at Cairns Art Gallery last week, including several brand new sculptures, two of which are pictured here. The artist describes her practice as focused on bodies and relationships: relationships between people and other creatures, between people and bodies, between the artificial and the natural, between creatures and the environment. This question of our place in the environment is key to this exhibition, as well as our relationship to and our responsibilities towards the other creatures we share it with. Piccinini wonders what happens to us if we recognise that we are just one animal among many, and that our fate and theirs are tied together. Piccininis works are drawn from the real world but they are often not anything that we recognise. Their strangeness challenges our ...
