Daniel Weiss, the chief executive of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, at the museum in New York, June 12, 2017. The compensation packages of museum directors are drawing scrutiny as their institutions try to fill budget holes with cutbacks that have included layoffs and furloughs of lesser-paid staffers. Joshua Bright/The New York Times. by Robin Pogrebin NEW YORK (NYT NEWS SERVICE).- Many of New Yorks museum leaders have taken pay cuts to offset some of the financial damage their institutions are suffering from their COVID-related closures. But at a time when museums are facing their most severe financial downturn in decades, one that has led some to make painful cuts in staff, critics are questioning whether such reductions go far enough. At the Guggenheim, the director, Richard Armstrong, took a 25% cut in pay. But the group A Better Guggenheim made up of current and former staff members in a July 23 Instagram post called on Armstrong, who earned $1.4 million a year in compensation in 2018, to take a deeper cut instead of continuing to target the museums most vulnerable staff with furloughs. In June, after the Asia Society considered furloughs that were later avoided, staff members complained in a letter to the board that the 50% pay cut taken by its president and chief executive, Josette Sheeran, who earned $937,000 in compe ... MELBOURNE.- New research 88 years in the making reports nine new fossils of ancient seals, more than doubling the known fossil record of seals in Australia and revealing that our ancient seals were much smaller than what we see today. LONDON.- The gulf between accurate recollection and false memory is explored in the richly toned and layered paintings of Antonia Showering (b. 1991). Combining elements of her cultural heritage with personal experience, the paintings fluid forms, both figurative and abstract, point to the deeply-subjective nature of representation. Introductions | Antonia Showering is curated by Susan May, Global Artistic Director. Showerings process begins with the application of distemper onto raw canvas placed flat on the floor, loosely brushed across the surface. The first coats of paint pigment react with this ground, creating fluid, abstract forms in pools of colour. Rather than work against these, Showering uses them as the basis for scenes that emerge through subsequent layers; sometimes suggestive of landscapes that meld her Swiss and Chinese heritage, at others, evocations of domestic scenes or events.
