HONG KONG.- Sothebys unveiled Amedeo Modiglianis stunning Nu couché (sur le côté gauche) to a packed audience of collectors and media, who are the first ever to view the masterpiece on exhibition in Asia. The painting is estimated to sell for in excess of $150 million in Sothebys Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale on 14 May 2018 the highest estimate ever placed on a work of art at auction. Painted a century ago, Nu couché is the greatest work from the iconic series in which Modigliani reinvented the nude for the Modern era. LONDON (AFP).- The first statue of a woman in London's Parliament Square was unveiled on Tuesday to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote in Britain. The statue of women's rights campaigner Millicent Fawcett will stand alongside those of 11 men, including Britain's wartime leader Winston Churchill, Indian independence icon Mahatma Gandhi and anti-apartheid figurehead Nelson Mandela. The American and French first ladies spent about half an hour visiting the show of 59 portraits by the 19th century French painter, the first ever dedicated to this aspect of his work. In the current situation, in which international borders are being redrawn, managed and monitored by force, and in which individual countries are increasingly subject to the affects of capitalist profit cycles, it is time to look into architectural forms which respond to these supposedly set structures. African cities are presented here as sites of refuge, which in their rapid transformation are producing new architectural typologies, changes in infrastructure and a rapidly expanding interaction with digital technologies. The UK dance company putting a new spin on the art
LONDON (AFP).- Whether in a wheelchair, on crutches or without any disability at all, performers from the Candoco company are giving London audiences a fresh twist on contemporary dance. "It makes you very aware of your own body, as well as others, and how extraordinary that can be on the stage," said David Clarke, a London silversmith who has come to Sadler's Wells theatre for a double bill. The first performance explores the individual style of the seven Candoco dancers, while the second wittily examines prejudices and physical differences. "When you see movements with missing limbs, or shortened limbs, it makes you aware of how incredible the body is," added Clarke. AMSTERDAM.- The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam presents the debut museum solo of Studio Drift from 25 April 26 August 2018. In addition to early designs, the exhibition features new, previously unseen work by the Dutch duo Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta the founders of Studio Drift. Specially for the presentation at the Stedelijk, Studio Drift will create the largest-ever installation of Fragile Future. At the core of the installation will be Fragile Future Chandelier 3.5 (2012) acquired by the museum in 2015. NAPLES.- Glenn Ligon's first solo exhibition in Italy borrows its title from a line in Pier Paolo Pasolini's poem Ma Era L'Italia Nuda E Formicolante/But It Was a Naked and Swarming Italy, in which he depicts the privations and poetic possibility of the country during the post-war period. In the exhibition, Ligon features a new series of silkscreen and ink marker paintings based on abstracted letter forms, two neons which address the Neapolitan setting of the exhibition, and two paintings from his iconic Stranger series, made with oil-stick and coal dust, the text of which he transcribed from James Baldwin's 1953 essay Stranger in the Village. TURIN.- Quartz Studio is presenting a project by Giuseppe Gabellone (Brindisi, Italy, 1973), coinciding with the artist's solo exhibition at Galleria Zero... in Milan. Giuseppe Gabellone's exhibition is the second planned for 2018 by Quartz Studio, organized with the support of the Fondazione Sardi per l'Arte. Giuseppe Gabellone conceived a metal structure for Quartz's space that is in physical opposition to the space's walls and takes on anthropomorphic features. Gabellone says, "I wanted the sculpture to stretch in the space as much as possible. As if someone were opening their arms as far as they could to stop others from approaching or entering. LIVERPOOL.- The Walker Art Gallery has announced the 60 artists whose paintings will feature in the John Moores Painting Prize 2018 exhibition, marking 60 years of the UKs longest-established painting prize. The free exhibition will be held at the Walker from 14 July to 18 November, showing as part of Liverpool Biennial 2018. Paintings were selected from more than 2,700 entries by an esteemed panel of jurors. This years jurors include artists Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, Lubaina Himid MBE, Bruce McLean and Liu Xiaodong, and curator Jenni Lomax. He started painting at the age of fourteen and studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam in the 1940s. He was one of the founders of the avant-garde movement Cobra in 1948.
