Henning Strassburger's "KÖPFE": Bold paintings and sculptures explore identity and modern life | | Thomas Schütte's monumental "Frauen" sculptures arrive in New York at Gagosian | | From Julia Roberts to the McCloskeys: Sam McKinniss explores the void in "The Perfect Tense" | Henning Strassburger, Abstract Alphakenny I (Hedonist), 2024, signed recto, oil on canvas, 150 x 110 cm. 59 x 43 1/4 in. Unique BERLIN.- KÃNIG GALERIE is presenting KÃPFE (en: heads), the first solo exhibition for the gallery by Henning Strassburger, located in the Nave of St. Agnes. The exhibition includes new paintings and, for the first time, sculptures that powerfully embody Strassburgers dynamic visual language. With bold colors and gestural compositions, the artist explores the multi-layered intersections of identity, media, and social narratives. His works offer lively commentary on today's fluid existence. A delight in the image is perhaps the most prominent feature of these new works: a playful exhilaration that turns away from pure abstraction and toward the flesh of painting, its figures, colors, and stories. Strassburger was initially praised as an abstract painter, but in recent years, his relationship to abstraction has become increasingly critical. As a result, Strassburgers paintings engage with figuration, with specific formal allusions to German painters. He has a ... More | | Thomas Schütte, Bronzefrau Nr. 14 (Bronze Woman No. 14), 2003. NEW YORK, NY.- Gagosian announces an exhibition of monumental sculptures by Thomas Schütte in New York. Opening on January 22 at the West 21st Street gallery, the installation includes six sculptures from the Frauen (Women) series and the related Torso (2005). The largest presentation of this historic body of work in the United States to date, the exhibition highlights its importance within the oeuvre of one of the most significant sculptors of our time. Schüttes multivalent practice incorporates painting, drawing, printmaking, architectural model making, and sculpture. Having emerged as an artist after the development of Conceptual art and rejecting that movements attempted refusal of the body, Schütte uses the human figure as a means of inquiry into aesthetics and culture, often with a sardonic, critical stance toward ... LOS ANGELES, CA.- David Kordansky Gallery is presenting The Perfect Tense, its first solo exhibition of new paintings by Sam McKinniss. The exhibition will be on view in Los Angeles at 5130 W. Edgewood Pl., through February 23, 2025. McKinniss paints pictures based on pre-existing images found online, transforming visual building blocks of the public domain into open-endedand paradoxically personaldocuments of emotional life. In many cases, these imageswhich often encompass people and scenes from disparate corners of popular culture or art historyalso pre-exist in the minds of their viewers. For McKinniss, the challenge is to re-invest these images with a material conviction that may re-establish them as sites of real feeling. Images that begin as relatively generic cultural products thereby become full-spectrum demonstrations of human experience. As its title suggests, The Perfect Tense is oriented toward the past. More Exhibition celebrates the radical history of Düsseldorf's Ratinger Hof NEW YORK, NY.- Inscribed on the wall of the legendary Düsseldorf punk bar the Ratinger Hof was its motto: Either you are hot or cold, the lukewarm ones the Lord will spit out of his mouth. The adage was ushered in with the radical renovation to the bar in 1971, by two women, Carmen Knoebel and Ingrid Kohlhöfer, who then happened to be the romantic partners of two other artists, Imi Knoebel and Blinky Palermo. Ratinger Hof introduced a stylistic shift that mirrored the contemporary and experimental tendencies of art and music in 1970s; the space was transformed with painted white walls and neon lights, the latter inspired by the works of Dan Flavin. The newly installed lurid lights were an invitation for those bold enough to enter. Scene set, the club became home to cutting edge musical acts of the period, where art and music dared in tandem. Echo of Renewal takes place in the present of the person I have become after December 2022, a turning point in my life when I was arrested due to a regrettable decision that led to a warrant for my arrest. I felt embarrassed and afraid to confront my family and friends but facing myself and my emotions was the greatest challenge. My journey is reflected in Echo of Renewal, which expresses how I began to understand how my past experiences have shaped me, leading to personal growth over time. Although I still feel regret for my actions, Ive learned that one mistake does not define who I am. I remain committed to pursuing my goals and aspirations while improving myself. This highlights the potential for growth despite past mistakes and serves as a message to others: dont let regret consume your life; instead, learn from it and keep moving forward. ...
