During this time, Picasso defied the ever-worsening and increasingly horrifying events that were unfolding in his adopted home, and turned inwards, painting the world of his studio and those who peopled it with an irrepressible energy. More Three sleeping beauties emerge from more than a combined century's worth of slumber LONDON.- Our love of cars follows many paths: one of the less trodden is taken by those people who so love a car that they put it away for 50 years in a garage or barn under a tarpaulin rather than part with it. Maybe this shows as much love as those who spend fortunes restoring such cars? In the next H&H Classics sale on September 16 these two groups have a chance to connect briefly when three cars which have been in storage for between three and five decades each true barn finds - come to auction. The trio of sleeping beauties will thus have a chance of attracting buyers / restorers who will relish the challenge of bringing them back to life. The cars are a Jaguar, a Rover and a Singer. More Thierry Goldberg Gallery opens an exhibition of works by poet and photographer Kevin Claiborne NEW YORK, NY.- In the time of pandemic and protest, the poet and photographer Kevin Claiborne is asking urgent, necessary questions. They are the questions long unanswered, that have placed Black people at the center of this moment, where they are disproportionately affected. His relentless performance of inquiry is the project, BLACKNESS IS (2020), that sees his questions married to landscapes in an admixture that form images that represent, what he calls, the body as border: Earlier this year, on a trip to Joshua Tree, in the Mojave Desert, Claiborne began writing down the questions that came to him that he considered as a way to get to the core of Blackness. In Joshua Tree, he explains, I started thinking about the relationship between the environment and Black peoples identity development in beautiful yet potentially harmful places. ... Responding to a post on social media about Chinese American relations a few months ago, he typed in the image of the smiley pig face the cute one, he said and went about his day. But his posting soon caused an outcry and he was called a bigot for what his critics said was his effort to deride the Chinese people as pigs. Within days, Jiang had lost his job and, he said, his reputation. Now Jiang, who has been a U.S. citizen for more than two decades, has brought a lawsuit in New Jersey Superior Court, contending that his offhand remark on social media was purposely distorted by those who object ... More Solo exhibition of works by Maja Ruznic opens at Hales LONDON.- Hales opened Name of the Voice, a solo exhibition of works by Maja Ruznic (b. 1983 Bosnia & Hercegovina). Her first solo exhibition with the gallery comes after her inclusion in Hales New Yorks group exhibition, The Moon Seemed Lost. Ruznic is primarily a painter, drawing on personal and collective memories to create works that deeply connect with human psyche. She describes the process of painting as trying to remember a dream, touching on Bracha L. Ettingers theories of matrixial borderspace: the space of shared effect and emergent expression, across the thresholds of identity and memory. Ruznic deftly weaves themes of trauma and suffering with mythology and healing, softening the darker subject matter in her work. This softening is then applied to the process of painting, where blurring and allowing shapes ...
