Grave in the center of the cairn. © Denis Gliksman, Inrap. PARIS.- An Inrap team has recently excavated a group of aligned menhirs at Veyre-Monton (Puy-de-Dôme). This research, prescribed by the State (Drac Auvergne RhôneAlpes), was conducted in the context of construction work by the APRR society to widen the A75 motorway. This is the first time such alignments, cairns and statuemenhirs have been discovered in Auvergne or, more broadly, in central France. The 1.6-hectare excavation, surrounded by the volcanic reliefs characteristic of the Limagne des buttes, unearthed around thirty monoliths from 1 to 1.6 meters tall. These menhirs form a more or less straight and continuous alignment, extending along 150 meters in the excavation zone and probably beyond. They are bordered by another alignment of large stones, in the continuation of which five stones are arranged in a horseshoe shape. Finally, six regularly spaced stones form a circle measuring 1.5 m in diameter. Clearly visible in ... More |

| Almine Rech joins the representation of the Karel Appel Estate | | Once-lost Rossetti painting acquired by the British Museum | | Reynolda presents 'Leyendecker and the Golden Age of American Illustration' | Karel Appel, Burning Child with Hoop, 1961 - Oil on canvas - 300 x 230 cm, 118 1/8 x 90 1/2 inches / © Karel Appel Foundation / Adagp, Paris 2019 / Collection Musée dArt Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France. PARIS.- Almine Rech announced that it will join the representation of the Karel Appel Estate, beginning with an exhibition in Paris during the fall of 2019. Almine Rech will hold its first monographic exhibition dedicated to Karel Appel (1921-2006), on view in the gallerys Paris space from October 12 to November 16, 2019. If Appel is considered the most important Dutch artist of the second half of the 20th century, this is only partly true: he was of course born in Amsterdam, but in 1950, at age 29, left the Netherlands for good. He moved to Paris with Corneille, Constant and Asger Jorn - somewhat the nucleus of CoBrA, a fiercely European avant-garde group founded two years earlier. Amsterdam was the city of my youth; Paris was that of my evolution. What I learned there remains most crucial, he later told writer Simon Vinkenoog. Soon ... LONDON.- The British Museum has acquired a rarely-seen painting by the English painter and poet and founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882). The artwork called The Death of Breuze Sans Pitié has hardly been exhibited since it was created in 1857 and its location was unknown for much of the 20th century. It goes on display in the British Museum on Tuesday (3 September 2019), the first time it has been seen in public in 26 years. The painting was one of 7 created by Rossetti for his friend, the celebrated 19th century designer William Morris. Morris later sold them all (five eventually went to the Tate collection in 1916) but the whereabouts of this particular painting became unknown sometime after a 1926 auction in New York. No photo of the work existed at the time, and a written description of 1899 was all that was known about what the work depicted. The painting was ... More | | J.C. Leyendecker (18941951) captivated the public with his striking images and fashionable depictions of handsome men and glamorous women. This is the museums first exhibition focused on illustration and its first to explore the work of an openly gay artist. Reynolda is the opening venue for a national planned tour of Leyendecker and the Golden Age of American Illustration. This single-source exhibition was provided by PAN Art Connections. Between 1896 and 1950, Leyendecker illustrated more than 400 magazine covers for the nations trade and general interest publications, including The Saturday Evening ... More |

Image by Allan Pollok-Morris. Courtesy Jupiter Artland. EDINBURGH.- Jupiter Artlands latest permanent commission, Gateway, by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos is on view as part of Edinburgh Art Festival and takes the form of a vibrant swimming pool pressed into the landscape. The Scottish sculpture park also presents the first solo UK exhibition of pioneering choreographer and artist, Trisha Brown with Time, Space, Gravity. Gateway is an artwork integrated in a whimsical pool garden and is the result of a three-year collaboration between Jupiter Artland and the artist. The nine-metre, fully functioning swimming pool is surrounded by a yew hedge that frames the whole composition and is a natural limit to the artist´s intervention which draws inspiration from the leylines that are said to intersect at the 100 acres sculpture park. These leylines are believed by some to channel earthly energy, connecting sacred and spiritual sites across the world. Of Gateway, ... More | | Simon Fujiwara, Joanne, 2016/2018. LONDON.- Taymour Grahne is presenting After the Ice, NYC-based artist Matthew F Fishers first solo show in the UK. In this new body of work, Fisher continues to play with one's idea of what is real, questioning the intricate relationship between constructed images and their corresponding physical objects and memory. Challenging the viewers sense of perception, the artist creates imagery that are at once familiar and unexpected. At first glance, majestic rocks, peaceful oceans, and sea creatures surface from the artists canvases, but at closer inspection these instantly recognisable images unfurl into idealised shapes and colours. It is only through ones mind that those images elicit memories of lived experiences, creating a reality suspended between the personal and the universal. More Texan artist revisits ancient dogma NEW YORK, NY.- Ceres Gallery presents Music of the Spheres, an exhibit of 22 digital paintings by Chalda Maloff. This latest group of artworks offers the viewer a fantastical biosphere of botanic and aquatic images. Rooted in the Greek philosophy of Music of the Spheres, these abstract artworks are suggestive of the pulse or rhythm of life. This series of pieces originated in my mind on a wee hours saunter on an urban greenbelt, Maloff states. My attention was seized by a microcosm of insect webs and dew drops, which seemed to throb with an exquisite energy that felt almost audible. The specter called to mind the ancient concept that celestial bodies vibrate to make a form of music. The Greeks reasoned that, humankind, living in the midst of this continuous universal symphony, defines it as silence. But with tender consideration to the individual ...
