LONDON.- Luxembourg & Dayan, London, announced the opening of René Magritte (Or: The Rule of Metaphor), an exhibition dedicated to the development of Magrittes word-pictures during his years in Paris between 1927-30. To produce a metaphor is to borrow a semantic unit - be it work, or image - from its habitual context and transpose it into a new one. Red lips become cherry, the night is a curtain, and the world a stage. This transition, Aristotle tells us, can be made from genus to species, from species to genus, or in the form of analogy. But what if a word was to replace a picture, or vice versa? Such a transition would cancel the most basic material, formal, and conceptual distinctions between literal and figurative languages. Can such a metaphor ... More | | Lucian Freud, Man in a Blue Shirt, 1965. LONDON.- London Painters brings together works by the core proponents of the so-called School of London: Michael Andrews, Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, David Hockney, R.B. Kitaj and Leon Kossoff. Through a selection of self-portraits, depictions of their loyal, sometimes shared sitters and London scenes, the show explores the artists dedication to the figure and cityscape, at a time when abstraction prevailed. The story of the supposed School of London is a story of friendships, an intimate tale. With that in mind, London Painters unites pictures that highlight these relationships and the circles of shared acquaintance, as well as London itself, the city that provided such a thrilling backdrop to so much of their work says Pilar Ordovas. Man in a Blue Shirt, 1965, one of two portraits that Freud made of Francis Bacons partner, George Dyer, will be displayed ... Curated by Julia Peyton-Jones, Senior Global Director: Special Projects, in dialogue with Loren Muzzey, Sturtevants daughter, it consists of works from the Estate and private collections. Sturtevant has been acknowledged as one of the most important artists of the 21st century, having presaged the endlessly repeating, unattributed imagery that characterises the digital world of today.
