Getty Museum acquires Vilhelm Hammershøi painting   Salvador Dalí's iconic Lobster Telephone acquired by National Galleries of Scotland   Telfair Museums receives donation of 347 works by American photographer Bruce Davidson

Interior with an Easel, Bredgade 25 (1912) will go on view December 18, 2018.

LOS ANGELES, CA.- The J. Paul Getty Museum has acquired Interior with an Easel, Bredgade 25, painted in 1912 by Vilhelm Hammershøi (Danish, 1864-1916). The painting will go on view at the Getty Center in Los Angeles on Tuesday, December 18, 2018. “Interior with an Easel, Bredgade 25 is a characteristically luminous and enigmatic image that encapsulates Hammershøi’s particular visual poetry,” said Timothy Potts, director of the J. Paul Getty Museum. “Hammershøi’s carefully orchestrated compositions are defined by their sparse atmospheric mood, using a few familiar pieces of furniture and the fall of light through a window to create some of the most beautiful, contemplative interiors in the history of painting. This work is especially important for its play on the art of painting itself: it is a painting about paintings—one seen from the back on the easel, the other hanging on the wall. All that is missing, as so ... More

Export-stopped: this new addition to the collection has been saved for the nation with assistance from the Henry and Sula Walton Fund and Art Fund.

EDINBURGH.- One of the most famous of all twentieth-century sculptures, Salvador Dalí’s Lobster Telephone (1938) has been acquired by the National Galleries of Scotland, and is set to go on display this week at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. This iconic sculpture is one of the most instantly recognisable masterpieces of Surrealism, the art movement that emerged in Paris in the 1920s, which explored the world of dreams and the subconscious mind. It consists of an ordinary, working telephone, upon which rests a plaster lobster, specially made to fit directly over the receiver. The Surrealists loved the idea of unrelated objects coming together to create a new kind of reality, which subverted the rational and tapped into the subconscious. The bizarre combination of a phone and a lobster is at once absurd, repellent, fascinating and menacing, yet it is nevertheless ... More

Tinker Bell at Moat Brae House Dumfries.

DUMFRIES.- The real Tinker Bell - a delightful piece of theatrical history will be on display at the new National Centre for Children’s Literature and Storytelling. Moat Brae house and gardens in Dumfries, which opens to the public in spring 2019, was where the teenage JM Barrie and his friends played the games that inspired Peter Pan. When the play was first staged, at the Duke of York’s Theatre, London, in 1904, the mischievous fairy Tinker Bell was represented by a spotlight and the ringing of a small bell. Barrie had bought two bells for the purpose on a trip to Switzerland. Though tiny, they had a clear and distinctive sound that could be heard in every part of the theatre. One bell was given to Elias Elias, the theatre’s foreman and scene changer and became a treasured family heirloom. A descendent of Elias Elias was so interested when she discovered that the house where ... More

Rare archive of early Pink Floyd posters sell for £33,000 at Ewbank's Auctions
LONDON.- An extraordinary private archive of rare early Pink Floyd posters has sold for multi-estimate sums to total more than £33,000 at Ewbank’s Auctions on December 13. Dating from the band’s earliest days in 1966, the year after they formed and when the legendary Syd Barrett was still the frontman, they were led by a single example (above) for Marquee Club concerts on December 22 and 29 that year, which sold for £16,000 against hopes of just £800. The posters all pre-date the rock group’s first album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, which was released in 1967. In early 1966, Pink Floyd were still largely a rhythm and blues outfit, but as these posters testify, towards the end of the year they had started to move firmly in the direction of psychedelia under the influence of Barrett. Touring significant but small venues alongside other nascent groups, ... More
