Pimpy Pat, by Zachary Balber. Archival pigment print on Hahnemuhle paper. Photo by World Red Eye / Misha Mehrel. MIAMI, FLA.- The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU presents the electrifying new exhibition Zachary Balber: Tamim (on view now through March, headlines Miami Art Week). This is the first time these photographs have been exhibited in full color, some are new and have never been shown. Zachary Balber is a rising star in Miamis art scene who is fast gaining national acclaim. These portraits cut through uncharted terrain. Some of these monumental portraits were printed as large as possible, to show the subjects at two or three times their human scale. Since many of these men have serious tattoos, this creates the effect of transforming a portrait into a landscape experience for the viewer ‒ the markings across their flesh forge an explicit landscape. For this show, he uses portrait photography to uncover the camouflaged identity of some of Judaisms ... More |

BISHKEK (AFP).- The director of Kyrgyzstan's state art museum resigned on Monday after a feminist art exhibition that included female nudity riled conservatives in the majority Muslim country. Mira Djangaracheva said she had tended her resignation following threats to her and other staff after the museum put on an exhibition themed on women's economic freedom that prompted calls for her sacking. In a statement on Monday, the impoverished republic's culture ministry criticised the exhibit for using the "language of provocation" and disorientating visitors. Djangaracheva stressed on Facebook that she quit voluntarily following a "negative aggressive reaction on the part of national patriotic forces". "It is a pity this has been initiated by people who have never been to a museum," she said. The exhibition included a female body presented as a punchbag and opened with a nude performance ... More | | Evelyne Daitz with the photographer George Tice in 1986. Tom Groenfeldt via The New York Times. by Neil Genzlinger NEW YORK (NYT NEWS SERVICE ).- Evelyne Z. Daitz, who worked with Lee D. Witkin at his pioneering Witkin Gallery, generally regarded as the first commercially successful photography gallery in New York, then took it over after his death in 1984 and ran it for another 15 years, died Oct. 31 in Manhattan. She was 83. Douglas Forrest, a nephew, said the cause was cardiopulmonary arrest caused by hypertension. Daitz advanced the careers of countless photographers and helped carry forward Witkins belief in the photographic print as a collectible art form, an idea that was relatively new when he founded the gallery in 1969. She was known for an adventurous programming spirit. During her tenure the gallery exhibited established photographers like Jill Freedman, Evelyn Hofer and Mario Cravo Neto, but it also showed the work ... More | | Exterior at 65th and Broadway. by Michael Cooper and Robin Pogrebin NEW YORK (NYT NEWS SERVICE ).- For years, the New York Philharmonic and Lincoln Center have struggled to do something about the orchestras lackluster concert hall. Plans came and went. Star architects signed on and signed off. The Philharmonic tried, disastrously, to return to its old home, Carnegie Hall. A $1.2 billion redevelopment gave Lincoln Center a sweeping makeover but left the hall as is. Then, in 2015, entertainment mogul David Geffen restarted the project with a $100 million donation that gave the hall his name. But construction, which was originally to have started this year, was put off as logistical problems sent things back to the drawing board. Now, officials say, the reconstruction of David Geffen Hall is finally about to happen for real, this time. A new plan to transform the acoustically and aesthetically challenged auditorium into a more intimate, ... More |

The myths that surrounded these two icons of the 20th century in their lifetime arose not only from their significant bodies of work, but also from their friendships (and conflicts) with leading political figures and their passionate, tempestuous personal relationships. More End of an error: full stop for UK apostrophe society LONDON (AFP).- Britain's Apostrophe Protection Society is closing down, its founder has announced, saying it had sadly lost the fight against "ignorance and laziness". Former journalist John Richards, 96, started up the society in 2001, aiming to preserve the correct use of what he said was the "much abused punctuation mark". Richards spent the last quarter of his career as a sub-editor, preparing journalists' copy for the newspaper -- a task which often involved correcting their use of apostrophes. When he retired, he kept spotting the same glaring mistakes in daily life and decided to take action, seeing the apostrophe as an endangered species in need of protection. But Richards said that with regret, he was now closing down operations for two reasons. "One is that at 96 I am cutting back on my commitments and the second is that fewer organisations ... More Belgian carnival drops UNESCO status over 'anti-Semitic' float BRUSSELS (AFP).- The Belgian city of Aalst near the capital Brussels has pulled its annual carnival from the UNESCO world heritage list, after an uproar from Jewish groups and the EU, the mayor said on Sunday. The row erupted in March after Mayor Christoph D'Haese defended a deliberately anti-Semitic carnival float depicting puppets of hook-nosed Orthodox Jews with rats sitting on money bags. The carnival attracts tens of thousands of people over the three days leading to the Catholic holiday of Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent. It takes pride in its no-holds barred sense of humour and provocation. D'Haese on Sunday said he made the decision as he expected UNESCO to strip his city of the designation later this month after both sides failed to find a compromise. "The citizens of Aalst have suffered grotesque accusations," the mayor said ...
