MADRID.- The exhibition Paolo Veronese (1528-1588) represents the culmination of a lengthy process of research and reassessment of the Museo del Prado's Venetian painting collection, one of the most important in the world and a cornerstone of the former Spanish royal collection. Following the successful exhibitions dedicated to The Bassanos in Golden Age Spain (2001), Titian (2003), Tintoretto (2007), and Lorenzo Lotto. Portraits (2018), this latest exhibition completes an exceptional survey of Venetian painting of the Renaissance. The exhibition is structured into six, alternating chronological and thematic sections. The first, From Verona to Venice, focuses on the artistâs training in his native Verona, a city with a rich Roman past in which the local artistic tradition coexisted with contributions from Venetian artists (particularly Titian) and Central Italian ones such as Raphael and Parmigianino. From these starting points Veronese soon developed his own style, characterised by formal and ... More |

Love for Van Gogh opens at the Kröller-Müller Museum | | New Hood Museum exhibition expands conversations around American Modernism | | Buchmann Galerie presents Tony Cragg: A deep dive into industrial nature and 40 years of drawings | Charley Toorop, Self-Portrait in front of a palette, 1934. Oil on canvas on panel (plywood), 45.6 x 40.3 cm. Kröller-Müller Museum / © Charley Toorop. OTTERLO.- Charley Toorop (18911955) is one year old when the first exhibitions of the work of Vincent van Gogh (18531890) take place in the Netherlands. Her father, the artist Jan Toorop, is one of the initiators. In 1953, when the director of the Kröller-Müller, Bram Hammacher, asks her what the artist meant to her, she replies: Vincent van Gogh was there for me even before I started painting, actually when I became aware. His art made a lasting impression on her throughout her life because of his deep, harsh love for reality, people and nature. Toorop was meant to become a musician but in 1917 decides to devote her life to painting. She finds inspiration in innovative art movements, including expressionism and cubism. She also experiences influences of a spiritual nature, such as theosophy. She admires a variety of artists and certainly not only Van Gogh. Nevertheless, it is his example that is defining. BROOKLYN, NY.- Higher Pictures presents Susan Meiselas earliest series of photographs, 44 Irving Street 1970 1971, following its exhibition at Harvard Art Museums. This is the artists fourth solo exhibition with the gallery. In 1970, while still a student at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Susan Meiselas was living in a boarding house at 44 Irving Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Boarding houses, like the one at 44 Irving Street, often began as large, single-family homes in cities or college towns. As average family sizes decreased and the socioeconomic makeup of neighborhoods changed, these homes were then divided up into smaller units while maintaining a shared kitchen, bathrooms, and common areas. As a result, each of the rooms at 44 Irving Street retained some of the homes original single-family character. At Harvard, Meiselas enrolled in a photography course and chose to photograph her neighbors for a class project. Though she didnt know any of ... More | | Fang Reliquary Figure. Gabon. The note pushing to the edge, pulling back from the brink arose from a discussion about painting in general, and the artist Prunella Clough in particular. What connects the artists in this exhibition is the sense that they think and to quote Clough fight with their materials. By taking things emotionally and physically to an edge, before bringing them back into view, each artist allows shape, imagery and atmosphere to emerge. They therefore build a conversation that goes back-and-forth between the materiality of the process and something drawn from the back of the mind or caught out of the corner of the eye.
