NEW YORK, NY.- After an unprecedented seven months of closure, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum invites the public to return beginning on Saturday, October 3. New hours are from 11 am to 6 pm, Thursday through Monday. To celebrate the first two months of reopening, the Guggenheim welcomes back neighbors, New Yorkers, and all other visitors with expanded Pay What You Wish hours from 4 to 6 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Through December 1, the museum will match every purchase of a full-priced ticket with a free family pass for an essential worker through the Art for the Front Line program. The Guggenheim will offer museum members and patrons preview days on Wednesday, September 30; Thursday, October 1; and Friday, October 2. NEW YORK, NY.- Sperone Westwater reopened on Wednesday, 9 September with three new unique sculptures by Bruce Nauman, his thirteenth solo at the gallery, his first 45 years ago in 1976. Since the late 1960s, Nauman has consistently questioned what an artwork is, adopting a wide range of diverse mediums, including his own body, language, sound, film, video, neon, holograms and 3D technology. His practice has expanded the traditional boundaries of art-making, reflecting the perceptions, preconceptions and contradictions which characterize our existence in the world. LONDON.- Annkya Kultys Gallery in East London is the first commercial art gallery to represent a humanoid robot artist. Ai-Da, the worlds first ultra realistic AI humanoid robot artist, is set to open her first solo London exhibition at Annka Kultys Gallery on the 10th September 2020. Ai-Da, the brainchild of Gallery Director Aidan Meller, is the first robot capable of drawing people from life using her eye, and a pencil in her hand. Using AI processes and algorithms developed by PhD students at Oxford University, Ai-Das ability as a humanoid robot to draw and paint from sight has never been achieved before, and makes Ai-Da an artist in her own right. UNIVERSITY PARK, PA.- As the fall semester begins, the Palmer Museum of Art at Penn State has decided to delay its reopening to the public and will open its doors in early January 2021. The museum will continue its robust virtual programming and online content while using the extended closure to address critical needs of the facility and collection. Though a difficult decision, opening in January is the most prudent course of action, especially in light of ongoing concerns surrounding the pandemic and bringing visitors to campus, said Museum Director Erin M. Coe. Extending our closure will provide us with the much-needed opportunity to make advances on other initiatives including critical facility and collection projects. NEW YORK (NYT NEWS SERVICE).- Ron Gorchov, an abstract painter widely known for vividly colored, saddle-shaped canvases that curved away from the wall and gently warped the viewers perception, died on Aug. 18 at his home in Red Hook, Brooklyn. He was 90. His death was confirmed by his Manhattan gallery, Cheim & Read. His family said the cause was lung cancer. A tall, solidly built man with a kindly face, Gorchov may have been the closest thing the New York art world had to a gentle giant in the late 20th century. He was soft-spoken and approachable, with a relaxed manner. In a 2006 interview with The Brooklyn Rail, an art newspaper, he said that his paintings came not from angst but from reverie, and luck and out of leisure. LONDON.- On September 29, Bonhams is to offer a unique piece of English football history the oldest surviving FA Cup presented to the winning teams between 1896 and 1910, including Manchester United, Manchester City, Everton, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur. The cup leads a special Sporting Trophies Sale at Bonhams New Bond Street saleroom. It has an estimate of £700,000 - 900,000. The trophy was in use from 1896 until 1910 when, realising that no patent had been taken out on the design, the Football Association withdrew it and commissioned a new cup a forerunner of the one in use today. The FA presented the withdrawn cup to their President, Lord Kinnaird, in recognition of his 21 years of service. The Pantheon is the memorial complex for France's literary luminaries such as Voltaire, Rousseau, Dumas, Hugo and Malraux as well as other great figures from culture, science and politics. A new art piece, unveiled Tuesday across the city, pays homage to other essential workers: the men and women who run the transit system and pick up garbage day in and day out. And it comes from an artist, Mierle Laderman Ukeles, who for decades has honored those who toil anonymously in the service of the city. NEW YORK (NYT NEWS SERVICE).- Yuval Sharon, who has established himself as perhaps the most innovative opera director in the United States through his experimental Los Angeles company, the Industry, has been named the next artistic director of a more traditional outfit: Michigan Opera Theater in Detroit. This Chicago native, 40, who received a MacArthur Foundation grant in 2017 and became the first American to direct a production at the Bayreuth Wagner Festival in Germany in 2018, will take over immediately, offering his first production Wagner in a parking garage next month.
