An important aim of the exhibition is to explore the special pictorial and thematic characteristics of Cézanne's portraiture, including his creation of complementary pairs and multiple versions of the same subject.
LONDON.- Three self-portraits by Paul Cézanne, painted in 1885 and 1886, including a complementary pair showing Cézanne in a bowler hat, have gone on public display for the first time in the United Kingdom in a major new exhibition, Cézanne Portraits, on view at the National Portrait Gallery, London. The exhibition brings together for the first time over fifty of Cézannes portraits from collections across the world. The first of the three self-portraits, painted around 1885, was, together with Cézannes earliest self-portrait, the only painted self-portrait to be based upon a photograph. The two portraits with a bowler hat show the artist in a familiar pose, looking back over his shoulder, his right eye engaging with the viewer. The shape of the hat reflects Cézannes pleasure in modelling simple, solid geometric forms. NEW YORK, NY.- Sothebys Contemporary Art Evening Auction on 16 November 2017 will be led by Francis Bacons Three Studies of George Dyer, a rare triptych that shows the artist at the height of his power. George Dyer was a singular figure in Bacons work appearing in over forty paintings, with as many created following his death as during his lifetime. However, triptychs of Dyer in this intimate scale are exceptionally rare. The present work was exhibited shortly after its execution and has not been seen publically since. NEW YORK (AFP).- Fats Domino, whose rollicking boogie-woogie piano helped give birth to rock 'n' roll, has died in his lifelong home of New Orleans, the coroner said Wednesday. He was 89. One of the top-selling artists of the 1950s, Domino had been hailed as an indispensable influence by legends including Elvis Presley, Bob Marley and especially The Beatles, who called his music their first encounter with rock. The famously reclusive musician, who had made few public appearances over the past decade, died Tuesday morning of natural causes, said Gerry Cvitanovich, the coroner of Jefferson Parish. FRANKFURT.- The Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung has launched a large-scale conservation project that will focus on one of the collections most important works over the next few years. The Rimini Altarpiece, one of the most comprehensive and best-preserved late medieval figural groups in alabaster, will undergo a range of conservation and restoration treatments, including state-ofthe-art laser technology. An in-depth technical analysis of the artwork will also be carried out. The Liebieghaus has acquired a special laser to ensure that the highly sensitive material can be cleaned as gently and effectively as possible, and has also been able to gain the support of the research laboratory of the Louvre in Paris which will assist in the precise analysis of the stones material composition. NEW YORK, NY.- Sothebys will offer property from the gallery and private collection of Otto Naumann, the preeminent dealer of Old Master and 19th century paintings, in a dedicated auction on 31 January in New York. After almost four decades of collecting and dealing Old Masters, Mr. Naumann is stepping down from his gallery space to allow his son, Ambrose, to establish Ambrose Naumann Fine Arts as a new venture. NEW YORK (AFP).- US fashion photographer Terry Richardson, who has been accused of sexually exploiting models for years, will no longer have his work published in some of the world's top magazines, Conde Nast confirmed Tuesday. It is the latest indication of shrinking tolerance for powerful men accused of sexual impropriety following the downfall of Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein with actresses, models and ordinary women increasingly emboldened to speak out. London-based Conde Nast International, whose titles include Vogue, Vanity Fair and Glamour, circulated an email within the media group Monday announcing that the company would no longer work with him. DALLAS, TX.- Bob Dylans owned and stage-played 1963 Martin D-28 acoustic guitar played for more than a decade and through his entire set at George Harrison's 1971 Concert for Bangladesh may sell for $300,000 when offered by Heritage Auctions Nov. 11 in Dallas. This is only the second known Dylan guitar to go to auction. It was one of his favorite instruments, said owner Larry Cragg, who served as Dylans guitar repairman and nicknamed the guitar Bob in honor of its famous owner. NANTES (AFP).- American actor Shia LaBeouf's artistic protest against US President Donald Trump has been attacked again -- this time by vandals using a flaming drone in western France where it went on display this month. The project, which features a white flag with the words "He Will Not Divide Us" filmed round-the-clock by a camera, has already moved several times from New York, to New Mexico and to Liverpool in Britain because of security problems. The exhibition features a body of work described as black paintings that Gordon Smith began producing in 1990. LONDON.- A fine pair of cloisonné-enamel baluster vases by one of the greatest and most influential artist-craftsmen of the Meiji era (1868-1912), Namikawa Sosuke, are among the highlights of Bonhams Fine Japanese Art sale in London on Thursday 9 November. NEW YORK, NY.- Sothebys October auction of Important Prints & Multiples concluded tonight in New York with a $12.1 million total Sothebys highest result for the category worldwide since 2010, and for New York since 2007. The group was led by Andy Warhols complete set of Campbells Soup I (F. & S. II.44-53), which sold for $852,500 and set a new record for any set of prints featuring this signature subject. In addition to two other works by Pablo Picasso and Edvard Munch that fetched over $500,000, the auction featured 29 Picasso ceramics that totaled $495,875, with all lots sold. After his death on October 2nd, 1968, his close friends and the world were stunned to find, hidden in his studio at 80 East 11th Street Suite #403, the completed Ãtant donnés, an elaborately detailed and beautifully disturbing roomencompassing tableau, which could be peered upon through two peepholes in a wooden door, enclosing the illuminated scene within.
