PARIS.- Eugène Delacroix was one of the giants of French painting, but his last full retrospective exhibition in Paris dates back to 1963, the centenary year of his death. In collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Louvre is holding a historic exhibition featuring some 180 worksmostly paintingsas a tribute to his entire career. From the young artists big hits at the Salons of the 1820s to his final, lesser-known, and mysterious religious paintings and landscapes, the exhibition will showcase the tension that characterizes the art of Delacroix, who strove for individuality while aspiring to follow in the footsteps of the Flemish and Venetian masters of the 16th and 17th centuries. It will aim to answer the questions raised by Delacroixs long, prolific, and multifaceted career while introducing visitors to an engaging character: a virtuoso writer, painter, and illustrator who was curious, critic ... ABERDEEN.- A painting gifted to the University of Aberdeen has been identified as a £2million work by a prominent Italian artist - more than 150 years after it was donated. The image of Roman ruins outside a city has now been positively identified by two experts as an original work by 18th century Venetian artist Canaletto. Senior lecturer in History of Art at the University of Aberdeen, John Gash, and leading Canaletto expert Charles Beddington have published their findings in The Burlington Magazine the leading journal on fine arts. It was often thought to be from the Canaletto school that is, by one of Canalettos pupils or someone imitating his style, explains Mr Gash. However I and others have long suspected it was a real Canaletto and now we have been able to confirm this. It is clear from the technique and the style, as in the language of forms and composition, that this ... More |

"I see this work as a ghost of the original and as a placeholder for those human lives that cannot be reconstructed, that are still searching for sanctuary," said Rakowitz. It recreates a Lamassu -- a winged bull and protective deity -- that stood at the gates of Nineveh, northern Iraq, from around 700 BC. It was destroyed by the Islamic State (IS) group in 2015. The new statue is part of a wider project to recreate more than 7,000 objects looted ... Scully reflects: Its habitual to think of abstraction as abstract. But its not, its a self-portrait. A portrait of personal conditions, one could say. I left London, and its stability, for New York, and its instability. Correspondingly, I dropped the vertical out of the paintings, along with my ...
