(Calla Kessler/The New York Times) by John Ortved NEW YORK, NY.- How much would you pay for Steve Jobs old Birkenstocks? Id pay to look at them, Whoopi Goldberg said last week at a party for Birkenstock at Cipriani Wall Street. About 75 cents, she added. Jobs well-worn, tan suede Arizona sandals, which the Apple Inc. co-founder famously wore in the 1970s and 1980s as he developed Apple Computers in his family garage in Los Altos, California, were sold for $218,750 to an undisclosed buyer at auction last month, according to the Associated Press. The shoes were now on display in a transparent plastic box for a crowd that included an international mix of fashion editors and Goldberg at one of the first major events the company has thrown in the United States. These two European artists, who were born in Germany just before the turn of the 20th century, discovered in the USA the richness of South Americas ancient cultures. They tried as teachers to convey to their students the cultural importance ... More | | Sean M. Decatur, president of Kenyon College, at his office in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, on Dec. 05, 2022. Ford/New York Times) by Robin Pogrebin NEW YORK, NY.- As the American Museum of Natural History prepares to open its new science center in February, the institution on Tuesday selected as its new president Sean M. Decatur, a biophysical chemist who currently serves as the president of Kenyon College. I have spent my career committed to access and opportunity for students and also to an understanding of science, Decatur said in a telephone interview. This feels like a natural evolution. Decatur, 54, who starts April 3, succeeds Ellen V. Futter, who will step down in March after a 30-year tenure. Given that Futter was the first female president and that Decatur will be the first Black leader, Scott L. Bok, the chair of the museums board ... More |

They appear to be the picture of familial harmony, which is demonstrated through their matching clothes and the holding of hands. This carried an important message for the nobility, whose portraits celebrated family lineage. Commenting on the work Dreweatts specialist Anne Gerritsen said: Such affection between siblings was rarely seen previously in British portraiture. While I am aware of a few slightly earlier examples of sisters holding hands, I have never seen such an early work of brothers portrayed in such an intimate gesture ... More |

Nationalmuseum acquires portrait of Marie-Gabrielle Capet | | Tampa Museum of Art receives Botero sculpture and $1 Million gift from Jorge M. Pérez | | Paul Bik expo at Modern Shapes Gallery in Belgium | Unknown French artist, Portrait of Marie-Gabrielle-Capet, 1780s. Oil on canvas. NM 7658. STOCKHOLM.- Nationalmuseum has acquired a portrait of Marie-Gabrielle Capet, a French painter of pastels and miniatures. The portrait depicts the artist in the 1780s, when she was a close associate of Adélaïde Labille-Guiard, one of the most celebrated portrait painters of the day, and her future husband François-André Vincent. There is ample evidence to suggest that it was Vincent who painted this portrait of the young Capet. Marie-Gabrielle Capet (17611818) was born in Lyon in humble circumstances. Thanks to well-connected acquaintances, in her twenties she became a pupil of the portrait painter Adélaïde Labille-Guiard, who was known for taking on female pupils only. Evidence of their close relationship can be seen in Labille-Guiards large self-portrait from 1785, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Capet appears beside her teacher, along with another pupil, Marie Marguerite Carreaux de Rosemond. Labille-Guiard ... Photography © Tomo Yarmush. ANTWERP.- Modern Shapes recently welcomed artist Paul Bik to their gallery for which there was an opening weekend December 3rd and 4th in the presence of the artist. The exhibition will continue through December 18th, 2022. When the adverse forces clash, he finds harmony. Balancing between geometry and distortion, mathematical precision and intuitive finishing touches, traditional craftsmanship and creation of new techniques, Paul Bik explores what lays at the boundary between contrasts. His work, in both process and the outcome, reflects his personality. Introvert by heart, he alienates himself in the quiet, elaborate process of creating precise forms just to deharmonize them with extravert, imperfect, statement-like final gestures. Yet, the tension they bring is subtle enough not to let the imbalance dominate the final message. Duality coexists in peace, just like the one artist finds in the semi-meditative state ... More |

OSL Contemporary opens an exhibition of works by Dag Erik Elgin | | New exhibition of unseen Robert Smithson drawings opens at Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome | | Anthony Meier welcomes Jessie Henson and is featuring her new sculptural works at Art Basel Miami Beach | Flowers of Evil #9, 2021. Oil on canvas, 55 x 45 cm. OSLO.- Treponema pallidum is the name of a spirochaete (spiral shaped) species of bacteria with its different subgroups that causes the disease syphilis. This is the bacterium that Dag Erik Elgin has bestowed a leading role upon in his recreations of Eduard Manets (18321883) final works, the sixteen still life paintings of flowers produced during the period between 18811883. Due to what was believed to have been the third phase of syphilis, in the last few years of his life, Manet was forced to retire from the bohemian life of the upper classes in Paris to a house in Rueil outside the French capital. The sixteen works Manet painted during this period are amongst the most underrated works of art history. With vivid and sensuous brush strokes the recreation of the petals in all their vitality on the canvas are imbued with a deep sense of beauty. These are artworks that emanate ... SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF.- Anthony Meier announced their representation of New York-based artist Jessie Henson (b. 1977) who employs notions of labor and time in her artmaking, looking for ways that repetitive actions of daily life accrue and build meaning, while pushing material elements to the threshold of fracture and disintegration. The gallery presented eight of Hensons new works on paper at Art Basel Miami Beach this December1-3 alongside work by Etel Adnan, Saif Azzuz, Sarah Cain, Leonardo Drew, Teresita Fernández, Habuba Farah, Claude Lawrence, and othersin anticipation of her first solo show at Anthony Meier in the fall of 2023. More Perrotin opens the second solo exhibition by Jens Fänge in Hong Kong since 2017 HONG KONG.- Perrotin Hong Kong presents the second solo exhibition by Jens Fänge in Hong Kong since 2017, featuring a body of new paintings as part of greater mise-en-scene that transforms the gallery itself into a human-scale composition. When Walter Benjamin wrote of arts waning aura in his seminal 1935 essay, The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction, he was referring to the unique presence in time and space that is lost in the replicated image. In taking Benjamins concept as the title for his latest solo exhibition at Perrotin, Jens Fänge challenges his audience with a mind-bending conundrum: what does presence mean when time and space have no fixed reference point? What is the aura instantiated in his complex collages and assemblages, with their anachronisms and dizzying perspectives? ... More Kirstie Alley's dance with Hollywood NEW YORK, NY.- Kirstie Alley, who died this week, was a knockout beauty with real comedy chops qualities often assumed (wrongly) to be incompatible whose self-ironic humor softened the kapow of her glamour-girl looks. Whether playing a fictional character (as in Cheers), playing herself (in interviews or in her reality TV series, Kirstie Alleys Big Life) or some version in-between (like the fictionalized version on Fat Actress), Alley infused every performance with a sly self-awareness. I know Im gorgeous, she seemed to say, but I dont take myself too seriously and you need not either. Alley was a rare standout in Hollywood for being a full-figured, at times even self-proclaimed, fat actress, who never stopped being sexy. Everything about her telegraphed lushness, abundance. She wore her dark hair in cascading waves that fell, a la Veronica Lake ... More 10 stages and screens where I saw connection NEW YORK, NY.- I never venture too far from a theater, but when I did have some time away from New York stages, I was watching TV and movies. In so many of my favorites of 2022, theres a sense of humanity to the work, whether that means it featured people connecting or simply being honest with themselves and others. Here are the plays, musicals, shows and films that stuck with me this year. That Martyna Majoks Pulitzer Prize-winning 2018 play is written with such gut-busting empathy and humanity shouldnt be a shock to anyone whos read the script or seen the previous productions. And yet, Cost of Living was still surprising stunning, even thanks to the four actors (Gregg Mozgala, Katy Sullivan, Kara Young and David Zayas) and their portrayal of caregivers and patients in a story about the ways we look after one another and what that care costs us ... More 'Do what moves you': When the student takes over as composer NEW YORK, NY.- When tap dancer Michelle Dorrance met Aaron Marcellus more than a dozen years ago, he was a regular student in her tap classes. He always hung at the back, working hard to keep up, but during improvisational exercises, Dorrance could tell there was more to him than might initially meet the eye. Youre a musician, arent you? she recently recalled having asked him after one of those early encounters. He told her, in a downplaying fashion that she would learn was characteristic, that yeah, he was a vocalist. So she looked him up on YouTube. I was floored, she said. What was this world-class vocalist doing at the back of my tap class? Soon after that, Dorrance formed a company, Dorrance Dance, and as that group went from success to success, Marcellus was frequently with them, singing and occasionally dancing ... More Bob McGrath, longtime 'Sesame Street' star, dies at 90 NEW YORK, NY.- Bob McGrath, who played the sweater-clad neighborhood music teacher and general advice-giver on Sesame Street for almost half a century, died at his home in New Jersey on Sunday morning. He was 90. McGraths daughter Cathlin McGrath confirmed his death by email Sunday. She said McGrath died from complications after a stroke. McGrath wasnt particularly interested when an old Phi Gamma Delta fraternity brother stopped him one night to tell him about his new project, a childrens show on public television. But then he had never heard of Jim Henson, the puppeteer, and he had never seen a Muppet. After his first meeting and a look at some of the animation, he knew this show would be different. Sesame Street had its premiere in November 1969, with McGrath and other cast members gathered around an urban brownstone stoop ... More Bernadette Mayer, poet who celebrated the ordinary, dies at 77 NEW YORK, NY.- Bernadette Mayer, a poet whose unfiltered yet richly layered work starting in the 1960s brought a sense of magic to the rituals of daily life with a stream-of-consciousness approach that pushed the boundaries of poetry, died on Nov. 22 at her home in East Nassau, in upstate New York. She was 77. The cause was complications of pancreatic cancer, her daughter Marie Warsh said. Throughout her career, Mayer rejected formalism for the avant-garde. She expanded the parameters of poetry by incorporating other elements into her work, including photography, collage, letters from friends, audio recordings and personal datebooks. Mayer believed that poetry didnt have to be a thing in the middle of a page with a lot of white space around it, she said in a 2011 interview with poet Adam Fitzgerald published by the Poetry Foundation ... More Almine Rech opens George Rouy's first solo show with the gallery PARIS.- Almine Rech is presenting George Rouy's first solo show with the gallery, on view from November 26 to December 22, 2022. Recent theories suggest that our gut commonly thought of as merely a collection of unsavoury organs may function as a regulator of our emotions, alongside the brain. In every language, however, many idioms express conflict or discomfort: a knot in your stomach, gut-wrenching, and gnawed from the inside George Rouy has portrayed such images in his paintings for many years. The belly not only affects our psyche but also is the origin of childbirth, where creation takes place. Rouy is eager to reaffirm this, loud and clear: in his mind, to paint is to give birth. The artwork thus takes on the same eminently intimate character as the body itself. The painting is revealed like an experience told, a state of health and consciousness in a particular moment ...
