NEW YORK, NY.- Sikkema Malloy Jenkins is presenting Hobby Horse, a solo show of paintings by Merlin James, on view from February 21 through April 5, 2025. The exhibition title refers to a motif seen in several works, of a small child in a cowboy outfit, riding a hobby horse. Imagery in James's work, while sometimes suggestive of personal associations or memories, often relates metaphorically to the nature of painting itself. In the classic 1951 essay âMeditations on a Hobby Horse,â E. H. Gombrich examines the way a childâs hobby horse ârepresentsâ or otherwise corresponds to a real horse, and uses the discussion to illuminate how illusion, abstraction, expression, meaning, and value all function in works of art. James explores similar concerns, and his hobby horse rider perhaps stands, in more ways than one, for the artist. ... More |

Throughout her career, Rosler has created work in response to political events and social issues, such as the American war in Vietnam, the ongoing housing crisis in the United States, the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and patriarchal expectations projected upon women. The artist has, on occasion, returned to past works and precepts to recontextualize them for the contemporary moment, demo ... Lost Flemish Renaissance painting discovered after almost a century | | Hauser & Wirth showcases Verena Loewensberg's color field and minimalist vision | | Gagosian to exhibit trio of large-scale paintings of Bob Dylan by Richard Prince in Beverly Hills | A Landscape with Peasants near a Lakeside Castle by the great Flemish Renaissance painter Abel Grimmer (c.1570-1620) Estimate £15,000-£20,000. LONDON.- Woolley & Wallis auctioneers are delighted to have discovered a lost work by the great Flemish Renaissance painter Abel Grimmer (c.1570-1620), which has emerged from a private collection after 90 years, from owners unaware of the artist behind it. About the discovery, paintings specialist Victor Fauvelle tells us: Initially we were sent photographs of the painting by a client who wanted to ascertain who it was by and what it might be worth. On first look at the photos, the composition seemed to be very typical of Abel Grimmer, but we were not hopeful that it was genuine, as works by him are very rare. We felt sure therefore, that this would turn out to be merely a copy. In order to research it further we went to The National Art Library in the V&A in London to go through the catalogue raisonné of Abel Grimmer and his father, Jacob Grimmer (1526-1590) (who was also an artist), which was published in 1991. The picture ... More | | Verena Loewensberg, Untitled, 1957. Oil on canvas, 67 x 67 cm / 26 3/8 x 26 3/8 in Photo: Jon Etter. © 2025, Verena Loewensberg Stiftung, Zürich. LONDON.- Swiss artist Verena Loewensberg (1912 1986) was a leading figure within the influential Zurich school of concrete artists. She was also the only female member of the group, which included Max Bill, Camille Graeser and Richard Paul Lohse. Hauser & Wirth presents the first solo gallery exhibition in the UK dedicated to this singular 20th-century figure, featuring striking paintings from the 1960s to 1980s in which Loewensberg broke from the strictures of concrete art. Shifting to ideas of color field, hard-edge and minimalism, the artist distinguished herself through her formal and chromatic flair. These are accompanied by two lively early works from the 40s and late 50s respectively, the only sculpture Loewensberg ever made and a wallpaper based on a design by the artist. The exhibition is organized with Henriette Coray Loewensberg, president of the Verena Loewensberg Foundation, with the support of Lionel Bovier, vice ... BEVERLY HILLS, CALIF.- Gagosian announces Bob Dylan, an exhibition by Richard Prince featuring a trio of large-scale paintings of the singer-songwriter, opening at the gallery in Beverly Hills on February 27. With Dylans popularity and influence again in ascendence following the theatrical release of James Mangolds Oscar-nominated biopic A Complete Unknown (2024), Princes work casts a spotlight of a different kind on the Nobel Prizewinning musician by reflecting on the extraordinary resonance of his image. The three striking ten-foot-square paintings on view in Beverly Hills, which together make up Untitled (Dylan) (2014), show a detail of Jerry Schatzbergs famous portrait shot of Dylan, which was reproduced on John Bergs cover design for the 1966 double LP Blonde on Blonde. Engaging with Southern gothic themes, Mitchells new images of seaside leisure (all made in 2025) are rooted in his Southern upbringing and explore the psychological space of memory, questioning how photographic tableaux might capture presences that are unseen but deeply felt. They also ask if photographs have the capacity to document memory and express self-determination in the light of history. NEW YORK, NY.- Fort Gansevoort will present The Spiritual World of Haiti, its second solo exhibition with internationally renowned Haitian artist Myrlande Constant. Since the 1990s, Constants hand-beaded and sequin-embroidered textiles have reshaped the traditionally male-dominated vernacular art form known as drapo Vodou. As a teenager in Port-au-Prince, Constant worked alongside her mother at a commercial wedding dress factory, mastering the tambour embroidery technique of threading beads and sequins through fabric. By foregrounding her specialized skills honed in the fashion industry, Constants approach to drapo has broken gender barriers and elevated the overlooked creative labor of Haitian female factory workers to the realm of fine art. Her pieces are immediately recognizable through their dynamic variety of materials and distinctive interplays of texture and colors that coalesce into resplendent painterly ... An artist who first appeared in Portugal in the 1980s, Léon settled in Paris in the same decade, where she still lives today. The artist works in parallel with drawing and film, using analog technology (film and a Super 8 camera) to make stop motion animation films in which she recreates the movement of bodies from images captured one by one. In both fields, the artist has always developed languages of great simplicity or austerity of means. In this exhibition, presented in six successive rooms, a significant number of male figures, almost always shown in American plan and dressed in very simple clothes, perform a restricted number of repetitive gestures in a loop. These figures can hardly be distinguished from each other. The feeling of depersonalization is accentuated ... More Exhibition at Kunsthaus Graz explores the power of listening and speaking in crisis GRAZ.- The exhibition Freeing the Voices begins with one voice, the scream of Marina Abramovićthat is to say, one human being that grows throughout the exhibition into a multitude of mainly human voices, and ends with the voice of the midge in the work of Tao G. Vrhovec Sambolec. We do not hear the voice of the midge with our ears, its presence is in our radical listening. Listening is not the same as hearingits specificity lies in our attention and awareness of ourselves and others, human and non-human beings and things. But just as the voice expresses us and at the same time the Other, so listening implies care and attention to othersand yet also implies obedience to authority. Why is an exhibition about the voice so important today? For at least two reasons. Firstly, it is our last chance to get in tune with the world; and secondly, today, in times of multiple crisis, ... More Andreas Mühe's haunting images confront Germany's past in "In the Grip of Wrath" FRANKFURT.- The Kunststiftung DZ BANK is currently hosting a powerful exhibition, "In the Grip of Wrath," showcasing the work of renowned German photographer Andreas Mühe. For over two decades, Mühe has used his lens to explore the lingering scars and unhealed wounds of German history, a mission that feels increasingly urgent in today's climate of rising radicalism. Mühe's work isn't just about documenting the past; it's about forcing us to confront its enduring presence in our lives. As the exhibition's title, and the evocative "Mooslahnerkopf" image, suggest, Mühe delves into the darker corners of German history, from the chilling legacy of the Nazi era to the more recent horrors of domestic terrorism. The exhibition opens with his "Obersalzberg" series, a stark exploration of the former Nazi retreat. But it's his "RAFNSU" series that truly resonates with ...
