LONDON.- Oceania is the first ever major survey of Oceanic art to be held in the United Kingdom. This ambitious exhibition celebrates the art of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia, encompassing the vast Pacific region from New Guinea to Easter Island, Hawaii to New Zealand. Oceania brings together around 200 exceptional works from public collections worldwide, and spans over 500 years. It is a rare opportunity to be immersed in the art and culture of an area that represents nearly a third of the world’s surface, a region rich in history, ritual and ceremony. The exhibition marks the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy, founded in 1768, the same year Captain James Cook set sail on his first expedition to the Pacific on the Endeavour. It has been nearly 40 years since the last major exhibition, held at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, presented an overview of the entire region of Oceania. Over this time, Oceanic ar ... LONDON.- After the success of the move to London of Christie’s October sale of Middle Eastern Modern and Contemporary Art sales last year, the sale will be held here again on 24 October, with a free public exhibition from October 20. The highlight of the sale, An Ear of Mud, an Ear of Paste, executed by Egyptian masters, Abdel Hadi El Gazzar’s (1925-1966, estimate: £350,000-450,000), was painted in 1951 and has been in the same private collection and unseen since 1986. The artist will be the subject of a catalogue raisonné due to be published later in 2019 by Valérie Didier Hess and Dr. Hussam Rashwan, the scholars behind the 2017 publication of the first ever catalogue raisonné of any Middle Eastern artist, Mahmoud Saïd. A mosaic and mirror work entitled Drawing in Glass Number 3 by the Iranian artist Monir Farmanfarmaian (b. 1924) reflects the artist’s strong passion for her Iranian heritage and the influence ... LONDON.- Gagosian is presenting Measured, an exhibition of two large-scale works by Chris Burden: 1 Ton Crane Truck (2009) and Porsche with Meteorite (2013). With a series of startling actions in the early 1970s, Burden challenged his own mental and physical limitations, and with them the boundaries of art and performance. Shut inside a locker for five days (Five Day Locker Piece, 1971), shot in the arm (Shoot, 1971), and nailed through the palms of his hands to the roof of his Volkswagen (Trans-fixed, 1974), he sought to reflect the violence that defined American politics, society, and media. Over the course of his career, the daring spirit of these early performances evolved into compelling large-scale sculptures that embody technical feats on an imposing scale. Burden used ... More

The group released its first album in 1966, but achieved its breakthrough a year later with "Surrealistic Pillow," which went gold. Balin, a tenor, wrote several songs for that album which also featured the singer Grace Slick. The group cemented its reputation with a performance at the 1969 Woodstock festival. Balin later left the band, but in the 1970s rejoined Kantner and Slick for what was then known as Jefferson Starship and which, according to Rolling Stone magazine, scored more hits than ... More

Flowers Gallery opens first exhibition of works created entirely in bronze by Nicola Hicks
NEW YORK, NY.- For the past four decades British artist Nicola Hicks’ practice has centered around a world populated by a cast of humanized creatures and beast-like humans, expressing the universal, often darker aspects of humanity. The present exhibition brings together works from key periods in Hicks’ career from the 1990s to the present day, and is the first exhibition of works created entirely in bronze. Hicks’ characters frequently resemble figures from common myths and shared stories, using a distinctive personal vocabulary to establish a connection between ancient and contemporary worlds. Central to this exhibition are works that involve themes of childhood and coming-of-age, often drawn from the perspective of the maternal gaze. In the work titled Recovered Memory, the two standing figures of a wolf-man looming over a tiny child, enact a sinister scenario reminiscent ... More

Rodeo Gallery opens exhibition of works by Liliane Lijn in its new space in Piraeus
ATHENS.- Liliane Lijn (b. 1939, New York) began her practice as a young artist within a male world of kinetics and conceptual art. The kind of work she has become known for, as the result of being affiliated openly and consistently with artists that deal with space, light and matter, stands bold and fresh still today. Although it is language, through poetry and myths, that has lead her work and her philosophy throughout and has been the thread in all her work. As she developed a language of her own during the early years of her career, work after work, Lijn has never stopped experimenting and pushing the limits of her practice. Merging science, technology with poetry, writing and performance, sculpture, video and painting she has built throughout the decades a very dense and coherently diverse corpus. She has always been an ‘un-feminist feminist’, referencing fields ... More

AMSTERDAM.- The Garage, gallery and residency space in Amsterdam, is hosting a solo exhibition of New York based artist Mike Lee from 29 September, 2018. His subjects are a collection of sphered body parts stripped of any distinctive features, ... More

The family’s photos of the Ju/’hoansi and /Gwi peoples—once known pejoratively as the “Bushmen” —heralded a transformation in the ways these Indigenous people had been represented through history. The Marshalls' experience became a groundbreaking photographic experiment and one of the most important ventures in the anthropology of Africa. Previously, the Ju/’hoansi, also known as the !Kung, had been depicted as primitive, romantic, or exotic, but the Marshall family’s 40,000 still images showed the men, women, and children at work and play, revealing both their culture and ...
