Picasso's "Young Girl With Basket of Flowers," recently sold at a New York auction for $115 million, will be loaned to Paris's Musee d'Orsay for a Picasso exhibit opening in September. NEW YORK (AFP).- In what was billed as the "sale of the century," the art collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller, comprising 1,500 pieces, sold at auction for a record-breaking $832.5 million, Christie's said Friday. The figure eclipsed the previous record held by the collection of Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge which sold for $484 million in 2009. Coming after the extraordinary $450 million sale last November of Leonardo da Vinci's "Salvator Mundi," also at Christie's, there had been some speculation that the billion dollar threshold could be crossed by this sale. Organized over 10 days, including online sales, it nonetheless broke numerous records, testament to the rude health of the global art market. The collection's crown jewel was auctioned Tuesday for $115 million, the sixth most expensive ever sold: Pablo Picasso's "La fillette a la corbeille fleurie," a part of the Rockefeller Collection since 1968. ... The majority of the works in the exhibition come from the extraordinary collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Reims, France, with selections from the Frye Art Museums own holdings. Together, these paintings chart the rise in status of landscape painting in France over the course of the nineteenth century as artists turned from classical depictions of distant lands towards local scenes painted en plein air (in the open air, or outdoors) in increasingly experimental styles. The Reims fine arts museum has one of the worlds foremost collections of landscape paintings by artists associated with the Barbizon colonyartists like Théodore Rousseau, Charles-François Daubigny, JeanFrançois Millet, and Constant Troyon, who gathered in the village of Barbizon ... McNeil, Jr. WASHINGTON, DC.- The Smithsonians National Portrait Gallery is presenting Black Out: Silhouettes Then and Now, as the first major museum exhibition to explore the art form of cut-paper profiles in terms of their rich historical roots and powerful contemporary presence. Well before the advent of photography in 1839, silhouettes democratized portraiture. Offering virtually instantaneous likenesses of everyone from presidents to those who were enslaved, silhouettes cost far less than oil paintings and could be made with inexpensive materials. Museums have paid little attention to the art form, but Black Out aims to broaden the traditional American art canon by placing silhouettesand their subjectsat the forefront. The exhibition, which primarily features works on paper, also brings together sculptures, prints, media art and mixed-media installations. These elements are present in the artists previous works, for example an entire waiting room cast into a series of solid bars, a healthcare facility reduced to a darkened stain against an exhibition wall, and a cafeteria dissolved across the expanse of a floor. For this exhibition, Turner has created a new series of five sculptures comprised of select contents of a psychiatric facility, which were recast into solid architectonic forms.
