Fran Langdon-Devlin, a staff member poses next to a Mail Coach, circa 1800, during a media preview of the new Postal Museum and the Mail Rail attraction in London on July 26, 2017. Snaking through special underground tunnels that have lain abandoned for years, London's Mail Rail is opening to the public for the first time for a ride on tiny trains that not even the Blitz could stop. The attraction is part of the new Postal Museum opening on July 28 that retraces the vital role Britain's Royal Mail played over its 500 year history. Daniel LEAL-OLIVAS / AFP. by Alice Tidey LONDON (AFP).- Few of the millions of people whose letters and packages were shuttled on a tiny train line deep under London ever suspected it existed. But now the public will get a chance to hop aboard the so-called Mail Rail that not even the brutal Nazi bombing of the Blitz could stop. Moving at just four miles (6.4 kilometres) per hour, the two-foot-wide train takes visitors along Mail Rail's tunnels, passing a "train graveyard" and two ghostly abandoned platforms along the way. "It was only ever meant to be a railway for post," Adrian Steel, the Postal Museum's director, told AFP. "This is the first time that people will be able to ride some of the tunnels, see some of the engineering and discover the story of the postal railway". ... More |

Missing Wright of Derby portrait discovered | | Major gift of Hopper archival materials received by the Whitney | | National Museum Wales acquires rare Richard Wilson portrait | Painting attributed to 'Follower of Joshua Reynolds' revealed as missing Wright of Derby self-portrait. LONDON.- An 18th century painting catalogued as being by a Follower of Joshua Reynolds at auction has been revealed as a genuine self-portrait by renowned British artist Joseph Wright of Derby (1734 1797). The discovery, a rarity for 18th century works by high-profile British artists, will be unveiled at the LAPADA Art & Antiques Fair in Berkeley Square, Mayfair, from the 15th 20th September. Acquired by Archie Parker of The Parker Gallery, a leading dealer in Old Master and British works of art, the painting has been traced back to 1793, when records indicate that Wright gifted it to the Rev. Thomas Gisborne of Yoxall. Gisborne was a close friend of Wrights and had amassed an extensive collection of paintings and drawings by the artist, including a portrait featuring Gisborne and his wife, two landscapes of the Lake District (subsequently at Kedleston Hall) and a painting of Mount Vesuvius. LONDON.- With support from Art Fund, National Museum Wales has acquired the c1750 painting Portrait of a Lady (Miss Mary Jenkins?), which is now on display at National Museum Cardiff. Thought to be an image of Miss Mary Jenkins, whose family owned Priston Manor in Somerset, the work joins only one other female portrait by Wilson in National Museum Wales collection. It offers insight into Wilsons early career, when he first trained in London as a society portrait painter, before later becoming best known for his landscapes. The acquisition has also enabled further research, which is currently trying to establish whether this may in fact be a marriage portrait, rather than one of a pair of siblings (Wilson also painted Jenkins sister, Elizabeth, in the same year). The womans hand clasps a sprig of white blossom, which may be choisya (orange blossom), sometimes used to symbolise an eternal bond. 'This ... More |

SALZBURG.- Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac presents a comprehensive exhibition by German artist Imi Knoebel, consisting of Datums-, Drachen- and Schnitt-Bildern as well as his new miniature series Elements, from 29 July until 26 August 2017. In his new works, Imi Knoebel (b 1940 in Dessau) once again explores the remarkable vitality of colour reduction and formal abstraction. In these pictures as indeed in all his work he remains true to the tradition of abstract, non-representational art, following artists such as Kazimir Malevich or Piet Mondrian. After puristic line paintings, light projections and white paintings (1972-75), Knoebel first used colour in 1974; from 1975 onwards he went on to overlapping coloured rectangles called Mennigebilder [red lead pictures] and finally to a garish, gesturally expressive application of paint on plywood or metal panels placed in a specific spatial relation. | href=' Flashback On a day like today, Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh died July 29, 1890. Vincent Willem van Gogh (30 March 1853 - 29 July 1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty, and bold color, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. After years of painful anxiety and frequent bouts of mental illness, he died at the age of 37 from a gunshot wound, generally accepted to be self-inflicted (although no gun was ever found).[3][note 2] His work was then known to only a handful of people and appreciated by fewer still. In this image: Jussi Pylkkanen, the senior director of 19th Century Art at Christie's, views Van Gogh's "A Pair of Shoes," as it went on display in the Christie's auction rooms in London, Friday, September 10, 1999. The rarely exhibited and little known painting is the missing link in an important series of five closely related pictures by Van Gogh between 1886 and 1887.
