The new species has a very long, flat, and shallow snout, and its very long fangs located almost at the tip of the snout, so the resemblance [to Scrat] is tremendous. BUENOS AIRES (CTYS-UNLAM).- Because of its tremendous resemblance, paleontologists thought of naming this new species in allusion to Scrat, the renowned squirrel-like character with saber teeth in the movie, Ice Age. Although they finally named it Pseudotherium argentinus, meaning, false Theria from Argentina. The entire skull is less than six centimeters in length and was found in Ischigualasto with two of the oldest dinosaurs known to date. Dr. Ricardo MartÃnez, a researcher at the Institute and Museum of Natural Sciences of the University of San Juan (IMCN), told the Agency CTyS-UNLaM: The new species has a very long, flat, and shallow snout, and its very long fangs located almost at the tip of the snout, so the resemblance [to Scrat] is tremendous. The skull was surprisingly well preserved, so that, at first glance, the similarity was obvious. "At some point, I thought of calling it Scrat," said Martinez, who conducted a very thorough study of the skull of this mammaliamorph (mammal-relative) alon ... More |
The Best Photos of the Day A photo taken on August 20, 2019 shows people in the Tower of Trigonion in the upper town of Thessaloniki. The Tower of Trigonion having built in the second half of the 15th century aand it was used as an armory and an artillery tower. It was strategically placed to the precise location of the walls that had to absorb most of the pressure during a siege or raid. The Upper Town , the only part of the city that survived the big fire of 1917, preserves much of the Byzantine and Ottoman era city fabric. Thus it features small stone-paved streets, old squares and houses in traditional Greek and Ottoman architecture. During the Ottoman period it was the main district of the Turks (Muslims) of the city, while the Greeks, western Europeans and the Jews were living around the port. Sakis MITROLIDIS / AFP

| Kunsthalle Helsinki opens the Finnish solo debut of Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone | | Titanic explorer to search for Amelia Earhart's plane | | Placido Domingo gets standing ovation in Salzburg despite sexual harassment claims | Ugo Rondinone, view of the installation vocabulary of solitude. Photo: Studio Rondinone. HELSINKI.- Kunsthalle Helsinki opened its autumn season with everyone gets lighter, the Finnish solo debut of internationally acclaimed Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone (b. 1964). The exhibition is organized in conjunction with the Helsinki Festival. Ugo Rondinone works across a wide range of contemporary mediums including sculpture, painting, audio, video and photography. He combines conceptualism with elements of Pop Art, reflecting on everyday events that often convey a contemplative, existential dimension. Through seemingly mundane elements, he delves into profound conceptual depths of the psyche and emotion. He uses rainbows and other universal symbols in the belief that art should accessible to everyone regardless of their age or background. The centrepiece of the exuberantly coloured exhibition is vocabulary of solitude from 2014, a meditative installation of sculpted clowns in passive ... WASHINGTON (AFP).- Robert Ballard, the underwater explorer who found the Titanic, has a new quest -- searching for the plane of famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart, who disappeared over the Pacific in 1937. National Geographic said Ballard plans to leave from Samoa on August 7 to carry out the hunt with his state-of-the-art research vessel E/V Nautilus. National Geographic said it plans to film the expedition and air a documentary about it on its television channel on October 20. Earhart went missing while on a pioneering round-the-world flight with navigator Fred Noonan. Her disappearance is one of the most tantalizing mysteries in aviation lore, fascinating historians for decades and spawning books, movies and theories galore. The prevailing belief is that Earhart, 39, and Noonan, 44, ran out of fuel and ditched their twin-engine Lockheed Electra in the Pacific near remote Howland Island while on one of the final legs of their ... FRANZ NEUMAYR / APA / AFP. SALZBURG (AFP).- Opera legend Placido Domingo on Sunday received a standing ovation at the Salzburg Festival, his first performance since he was accused of sexually harassing women. "Triumph in Salzburg, standing ovation for Domingo despite the Me Too affair," a headline in the regional daily Kleine Zeitung said, following his performance in the Giuseppe Verdi opera "Luisa Miller" at the annual music and drama festival in Austria. Eight singers and a dancer told the Associated Press earlier this month they were sexually harassed by the former member of the much lauded "Three Tenors", in incidents going back to the 1980s. In a report by the AP, several women, one of whom was identified, accused Domingo of using his position as one of opera's most celebrated singers to pressure ... More |

GALLEN.- On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Helvetia Art Prize (formerly the Nationale Suisse Art Prize), the Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen is staging a group exhibition of Swiss artists in which prize winners from previous years play a leading role. Based on this important prize, the exhibition aims to highlight the role of art schools, juries, awards and exhibition venues in the development of a young artist's career. Despite the social acceptance of the choice of profession and, above all, the choice of life for art, this decision always remains a risk, both financially and artistically. Success is not guaranteed and a linear or plannable development is not possible. The group exhibition is intended to contribute to creating a picture of today's Swiss art scene. Of course, this picture can only be fragmentary. The heterogeneity of the artistic contributions, the networking exhibited and the interweaving between the ... More | | Dylan & Me: 50 Years of Adventures. NEW YORK (AFP).- From Bob Dylan's first hard-driving blues number at summer camp to the rollicking Rolling Thunder Revue concert tour, the legendary musician's childhood best friend had a front row seat to the action. Now Louie Kemp has released a backstage pass of sorts into the mythology of Dylan, in the form of a memoir released this week, dishing on everything from the folk hero's Passover Seder meal with Marlon Brando to his own food fight at a Chinese restaurant with Joan Baez. The duo first met in northern Wisconsin in 1953, when Dylan was still Bobby Zimmerman, 12 years old, his guitar already attached as if a limb. As rambunctious pre-teens at a Jewish camp in the northwoods of the Midwestern state -- Dylan grew up just over the border in the blue-collar mining town of Hibbing, Minnesota -- the friends got in their fair share of trouble, notably for a shaving cream prank on their peers that saw them steal a car. But despite his antics Dylan was confident in his fate: "He always told me and the ... More |

Silkscreen, 1967 © The Bert Stern Trust. SAG HARBOR, NY.- Nathan Slate Joseph, a New York based artist has been an integral member of the New York art scene for more than 50 years. Joseph blurs the boundaries between painting, color and sculpture. I cant just paint color so it looks nice on the wall. Colors are nice. But how do you get colors to speak to you visually...The application of pure pigments..getting the quality of the paint to be softer...(the process) is more than just something painted on a surface. It gives the quality of something thats in the surface...its color, age and time. Joseph was awarded an Art in Architecture Award from the American Institute of Architects in 2003, he was featured by Sundaram Tagore Gallery at La Bienniale di Venezia in 2015, while also receiving an international award from La Florence Bienniale 2007. Organised by Greg Bergner and Marc Jancou at OFFSITE: CHALET in Rossinière, Switzerland, Marc Jancou Contemporary announces Little Anal Annie, an exhibition of works by this seminal American artist. | More News | SAGE Paris announces the representation of Katsunobu Yaguchi PARIS.- The work of Katsunobu Yaguchi, a Japanese artist, reflects his passion for repurposing objects and places that would otherwise have been abandoned, lost or discarded. He pays particular attention to townscapes, old houses, and traditions that are decaying. Since 2008, Katsunobu Yaguchi has confined himself into his own project, titled Café Washingtown, which was initiated by reinventing an old abandoned house, found in Mito City, in Ibaraki, Japan, as a café and a community hub where local residents come to connect, share, and create together. The house, a two-story building, was built from scrap wood and other salvaged materials, and by the late owners hands in the aftermath of World War II. Yaguchis artistic practice had been centered around Café Washingtown, involving a wide range of work, from production of newspaper, management ... The North American X-15 will be the first major artifact to be lowered and removed from the museums main hall. Visitors will continue to see changes as other artifacts shift and move over the next few months. These adjustments will prepare the space for the construction of a large wall to divide and close the Independence Avenue side of the Hall, the Barron Hilton Pioneers of Flight Gallery and the Albert Einstein Planetarium. Work to construct the floor-to-ceiling wall will begin Oct. 7, at which time the museums Independence Avenue entrance will close for approximately two years. More Lochlann Jain playfully turns categories on their head in her new book of original drawings TORONTO.- Things That Art: A Graphic Menagerie of Enchanting Curiosity is a playful book of original drawings that explore the possibilities and pitfalls of categories. Stanford University professor Lochlann Jain turns categories on their head to show their wonderfully multi-faceted and often irreverent meanings. From words we use to demean other people, to soften the blow of death, to describe the uncanny functions of our body parts, and even words that allude to our capitalist society, Things That Art combines linguistics and art to create an inquisitive pool of new categories that may have never crossed your mind until now. In a world where people are desperate to seek clarity whether its gender and sexuality, politics and religion, or simply how we go about making choices at the supermarket we are subconsciously categorising all the time. While categories ... More Officine Grandi Riparazioni presents 'The Sound of Screens Imploding' TURIN.- On the occasion of the Biennale de lImage en Mouvement 2018, the Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève started a new partnership with OGR - Officine Grandi Riparazioni, Turin. This is an unprecedented collaboration, at least in this form, in the long history of the Biennale. The dialogue between the two institutions has taken place on three different levels: the co-production of works such as those by Meriem Bennani and Tamara Henderson, the creation of a comprehensive catalogue, upcoming in the Fall of 2019, and most importantly the realization of a brand-new, site-specific version of the Geneva exhibition, purposely designed by Andreas Angelidakis for OGR. The Turin show, titled, as in Geneva, The Sound of Screens Imploding, is conceived as a series of individual environments. The concept for the show revolves around a fundamental principle: ... More Copenhagen Contemporary opens an exhibition of works by the Swedish artist Jacob Dahlgren COPENHAGEN.- In CCs new hall 4 the Swedish artist Jacob Dahlgren presents the exhibition Art is Life. It unfolds like a playscape comprising large-scale sculptural installations co-created by CCs visitors. The exhibition title, Art is Life, refers to the way Dahlgren observes and involves everyday life in his artistic practice. His materials are often sourced from DIY stores, supermarkets, or ironmonger shops places he often visits. Art is Life juxtaposes utility objects such as saws, bathroom scales, and dartboards in huge numbers for his serial works. When repeated, they are robbed of their original practical functions, instead becoming geometric abstract colourful works taking their form from the shapes of the objects. With his works, Jacob Dahlgren enters into a long art-historical tradition of using readymades where he adds everyday objects to his works as ... Searing heat failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the 882 men and women, who turned up Saturday in traditional costumes featuring vivid embroidery and bright colors to break the previous record, also set in Guadalajara in 2011 with 457 participants. "This new record shows that our traditions are continuing to spread among young people," Xavier Orendain, president of the Chamber of Commerce of Guadalajara and the event's organizer, told reporters. Dancers were required to perform a choreographed routine for at least five minutes without interruption in order to qualify for the record, said Guinness judge Carlos Tapia. Their outfits were also rated, he added, with male ... More Exhibition at Artual Gallery gives new meaning to much-loved genre BEIRUT.- The fascinating legacy that still life has left and the many ways in which contemporary artists are interpreting and reinterpreting the genre is the focus of a new collective art exhibition which opened at Artual Gallery in Downtown Beirut on August 14th. Over the past 15 years, Eveline Kotais interest in material dissolution and regeneration has culminated in the practice and process of cutting up and reworking her own paintings into new works. Dunja Rmandić, AGWA Associate Curator of 21st Century Arts, said, "Evelines practice is mesmerisingwhile one can understand the process, seeing the works in front of you opens up another dimension of experience and perception, of presence and being present." Eveline Kotai's unique technique of reconfiguring pre-existing works into new compositions via invisible thread, and onto new surfaces, echoes a world in perpetual ...
