BEACON, NY.- For many years, change came slowly to Dia, and that was by design. Since its inception 50 years ago, the Dia Art Foundation has maintained meticulous long-term presentations of minimal and conceptual art from the 1960s and 70s at its exhibition spaces in Beacon, Chelsea and Bridgehampton as well as site-specific projects around the country. To be an artist with work in its care a Donald Judd, Michael Heizer or Richard Serra was, and still is, to enjoy a form of eternal life. Recently, however, Dia has been adding to its pantheon of immortals with the aim of increasing the representation of women and artists of color. Last year saw the installations at Dia Beacon of abstract paintings by Mary Heilmann and the water-filled vinyl sculptures of Senga Nengudi, both still on view with no closing date yet given, as well as the opening of a shorter-term exhibition in Chelsea (through July) of Delcy Morelos immersive environments of shaped earth. NEW YORK, NY.- The day she turned 60, the artist and musician Kim Gordon felt, by her own admission, shipwrecked. She had recently gone through a painfully high-profile divorce from her husband of 27 years, Thurston Moore, and in the wake of their split, their band Sonic Youth the freewheeling and fearlessly experimental group that almost single-handedly defined the sound and ethos of American alternative rock ended its 30-year run. Plenty of people she loved attended her 60th birthday bash in New York, but she still felt unmoored. Gordons 70th birthday party last year, though, was another story entirely. Melvin Way, outsider artist who depicted inner mysteries, dies at 70
NEW YORK, NY.- Melvin Way, whose hallucinatory diagrams, composed with ballpoint pens and markers on scraps of paper in New York City homeless shelters, were collected by prominent art museums around the world, died Feb. 4 in a hospital near his familys home in Smoaks, South Carolina, a rural town northwest of Charleston. He was 70. His mother, Flossie Lee Hubbard, said the cause was complications of a stroke. Way, who was found to be schizophrenic in his 20s, emerged in the world of outsider art a label for works originating beyond the boundaries of the mainstream from the basement of a notorious and violent homeless shelter on Wards Island. Richard Abath, guard at center of Boston art museum heist, dies at 57
NEW YORK, NY.- Richard Abath, a night watchman whose decision to allow two thieves disguised as Boston police officers into the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in 1990 enabled the greatest art heist in history, and one that remains unsolved, died Feb. 23 at his home in Brattleboro, Vermont. He was 57. His lawyer, George Gormley, confirmed the death but did not provide a cause. The Gardner Museum, in Bostons Fenway neighborhood, is one of the countrys leading private art museums, with its eponymous owners vast collection of paintings, sculptures and historical artifacts.
