COPENHAGEN.- Reproduction at Copenhagen Contemporary (28 September 2019 to 13 April 2020) and Behaviour at Kunsten (26 September 2019 to 23 February 2020) complement each other in content and form as they explore the human perception of our world. Carsten Höller holds a PhD in agricultural science and worked as a scientist for several years before becoming an artist. His artworks incorporate elements from playgrounds, zoos and amusement parks, often presented in a pseudo-scientific environment to give the impression of research. This is also evident at CC and Kunsten where gigantic Fly Agaric mushrooms, carousels, smells and mirrors greet the visitors, who in turn constitute what art critic Baldo Hauser calls the ‘real material’ of the exhibitions. Carsten Höller firmly believes in the transformative potential of art which, transgressing normal conventions and perceptions, allows us to see the world, its objects and our ... More

LOS ANGELES, CA.- The Los Angeles photographer Laura Aguilar, who died last year at the age of 59, created work that explored her own identity, challenged traditional notions of beauty, and celebrated the ties that bound her to the Latinx, queer, and working-class communities in the city. Now, a group of the artist’s most important works will remain in Los Angeles, with the J. Paul Getty Museum announcing the acquisition of 35 photographs from five series that span Aguilar’s 30-year career. The acquisition was made possible through the generous support of the Museum’s Photographs Council and with additional help from council members Jan and Trish de Bont. “Laura Aguilar left us far too soon, but her powerful work remains as a testament to her vision and talent,” says Timothy Potts, director of the Getty Museum. “It is important and appropriate that these photographs ... BRUSSELS.- BOZAR presents a solo exhibition by the Belgian artist Yves Zurstrassen (° 1956, Liège, lives and works in Brussels). Entitled "Free", the exhibition provides a unique and selective overview of the past 10 years, subdivided into 5 series in 5 rooms. The exhibition travels from the Museo de Santa Cruz in Toledo to the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels, where the artist is based. A cyclical, ‘reversed’ chronological route; along the way we go back in time through the artist’s oeuvre from 2019 to 2009. A rhythmic play of abstract forms and bright colours, but also monochrome and striking yellow in his most recent work which forms the start and end of the exhibition. Inspired by the sounds of free jazz and abstract art, the exhibition shows us how painting – in a monumental, almost architectural form – converges with the space itself. On the occasion of this exhibition, double bassist and vocalist Joëlle Léandre will ... More

Exhibition of new sculptures by Dorothy Cross on view at Kerlin Gallery
DUBLIN.- Kerlin Gallery is presenting I dreamt I dwelt, an exhibition of new sculptures by Dorothy Cross. At the heart of the exhibition, a shark rises up from a floor of Carrara marble as if emerging from the ocean. The serenity of the marble’s surface, almost five meters in length and rippled by bluish veins, is interrupted by the ascendant body of this creature, glassy-eyed and frozen in space: we are not sure whether it is living or dead. The history of the shark, spanning over 420 million years, is longer than that of the stone from which it is carved – and yet it is the creature’s vulnerability, along with that of all marine life, that is captured in this moment. Elsewhere, two ears listen out from pillows. Seemingly pliable, the cushions are carved from Greek marble, the kinks of their fabric tapped into stone. A depression marks each surface, as if left by a resting ... More

Alexander Tallén receives this year's Young Applied Artists award
STOCKHOLM.- The 2019 Young Applied Artists goes to the ceramist Alexander Tallén from Stockholm. With a fascination for a smaller format, he presents the times we live in as figurines, displaying inspirations from the 18th century. The scholarship is worth SEK 100,000 and is being presented by the Bengt Julin Fund, administered by the Friends of Nationalmuseum, at a ceremony which will take place on 21 November. With a clear link to the figurine trends of the 18th century, Alexander Tallén creates unique pieces that communicate a contemporary message. Both his creative process and the expressive design makes the distinction between art and craft feel irrelevant. Alexander Tallén uses himself as a motif, which turns the figurines into multifaceted visual and mental self-portraits. With his black beard and elegant patterned clothing, he personifies ... More
