LONDON (AFP).- The buyer of a work by street artist Banksy that was partially destroyed moments after it sold has gone through with the purchase, Sotheby's auction house said Thursday. The painting "Girl with Balloon" was passed through a shredder hidden in the frame just after it went under the hammer last week for £1,042,000 ($1.4 million, 1.2 million euros). The modified version has now been certified by Banksy's authentication body Pest Control as a new piece of work in its own right, entitled "Love is in the Bin". The unnamed buyer, described as a female European collector and a long-standing client of Sotheby's, has proceeded with the purchase at the price agreed on the night. "Banksy didn't destroy an artwork in the auction, he created one," said Alex Branczik, Sotheby's head of contemporary art for Europe. "Following his surprise ... WASHINGTON (AFP).- The United States returned to Colombia Wednesday 38 ancient artifacts plundered over decades by a private American collector described as a "modern-day Indiana Jones." The FBI recovered the artifacts -- pre-Colombian ceramic pottery from the southern Narino highlands and the Caribbean -- after receiving a complaint about the museum-like collection at the home in Indiana of one Donald Miller, a businessman with an interest in archeology. Investigators found thousands of pieces from China, Colombia, New Guinea and the United States. "This collector was a modern-day Indiana Jones. Remember that what Indiana Jones did was to steal all manners of cultural patrimony from other countries," Colombia's Ambassador in Washington Francisco Santos told reporters during a ceremony at the Colombian Embassy. PARIS (AFP).- When street artist Banksy destroyed one of his works of art last week seconds after it was sold at auction, he probably added to its value, with some experts suggesting it could now be worth double its original price. No one knows how the secretive artist activated a shredder hidden within the frame of his painting "Girl with Balloon" just after it was sold last week by Sotheby's for £1,042,000 ($1.4 million, 1.2 million euros). The maverick British artist posted a video on Instagram in the wake of the prank accompanied by a quote attributed to Pablo Picasso -- "the urge to destroy is also a creative urge". He said he had fitted the shredder in case the painting should ever be put up for auction -- where its final price set a joint record for his work. "Banksy might think that by destroying his art he's undermining capitalists who buy it, but he's wrong," commented Mikael Faujour of the specialist French art magazine Artension. ... More |

Reagan hologram unveiled at museum dedicated to late US president | | Grande Decorazione: Exhibition of Italian monumental painting in graphic art opens at Pinakothek der Moderne | | Russian historians use Nazi photo to locate Stalin-era mass graves | Former US President Ronald Reagan is recreated on Hologram technology during a media preview on October 10, 2018, at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. Frederic J. BROWN / AFP. SIMI VALLEY, CA.- The Ronald Reagan museum in California has brought the late president back to virtual life with a state of the art hologram. It features his voice, facial expressions and even hand movements in a project that cost a million dollars and took four years to complete. It was unveiled Wednesday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, near Los Angeles. "It's amazing. It really is. It's a little jarring to be honest with you," said Joanne Drake, who worked in the White House during the second of Reagan's two terms in the 1980s and stayed with him until his death as an aide and spokeswoman. The hologram recreates three scenes: Reagan speaking from the back of a train during a 1984 campaign tour; in horse-riding garb at his ranch in California with wife Nancy; and in the Oval Office. "This will feel like you're standing right there with him," said John Heubusch, executive director of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation ... MUNICH.- Andrea Mantegna, Raphael, Michelangelo, Primaticcio, Annibale Carracci, Pietro da Cortona, and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo are world famous for their achievements in monumental painting. Mantegnas Triumph of Caesar from around 1500 is one of his most important works, soon rivalled by Michelangelos Sistine Chapel ceiling and Raphaels Stanze in the Vatican. These and later frescoes were taken up by printmakers and reinterpreted in their own uniquely graphic style. This exhibition offers the first overview dedicated to the subject of Italian monumental painting in prints from the late 15th century through to the 18th century. It features 120 artworks that are uncommonly striking, appealing, and artistically mature in both scale and form. Single sheets, some with highly unconventional interpretations of, for example, Michelangelos Last Judgement and compositions by Giulio Romano and Parmigianino, are on display alongside cycles of multiple sheets depicting gallery dec ... More | | A photo taken on September 28 shows the forested area near Moscow known as Kommunarka where historians belive Stalin's NKVD secret police killed and burried more than 6000 people in 1937-41. Andrei BORODULIN / AFP. MOSCOW (AFP).- A team of Russian historians and archaeologists have used a Nazi bomber pilot's photograph to help them pinpoint the location of mass graves in Moscow containing the remains of thousands shot by Stalin's secret police. The existence of a mass grave in the Kommunarka district in southwestern Moscow first came to light in the dying days of the Soviet Union when the KGB opened up its archives. It was one of three killing fields in the city used by Stalin's NKVD secret police in the 1930s. Historians believe at least 6,609 people were shot and thrown into mass graves in Kommunarka between 1937 and 1941. The gated forested area was once used by NKVD chief Genrikh Yagoda, who had a holiday cottage there. But he fell foul of the regime and was removed from his post in 1936 and shot in 1938 -- with his body most likely also disposed of in Kommunarka. Until recently, the mass graves were believed to be located in one area of the forest, where ... More |

More News | New exhibition at the Drawing Center focuses on three young artists NEW YORK, NY.- This fall, The Drawing Center presents an exhibition that focuses on three young artistsElijah Burgher, Toyin Ojih Odutola, and Nathaniel Mary Quinnwho explore diverse identities through portraiture and who do so almost exclusively through the medium of drawing. These artists have entirely distinct stylistic approaches and personal backgrounds but they are connected by the way in which they use drawing to investigate subjecthood as well as its resistance to depiction. Indeed, Burgher, Ojih Odutola, and Quinn embrace drawing because it invests surface with the felt intimacy of touch while nonetheless confirming it to be a malleable and uncertain construct. Ultimately, in the intellectual tradition of French theorist Ãdouard Glissant, these artists believe that the right to refuse explanation is as integral to the formulation of selfhood as is ... Originally produced for the Dakar Biennale 2018, the exhibition has been adapted to the context of ifa-Galerie, now including new works and being presented within the second phase "Movement.Bewegung" of the gallerys four-year research and exhibition programme "Untie to Tie". "Invisible" is an invitation to re-learn to perceive beyond the margins of the visible. Today, the visual sense predominates our ways of imagining the world that surrounds us. Contemporary societies are defined by an incessant flow of images whereas the unmanifest has been weeded out of the collective imaginaries, and the spiritual dimension has been dismissed from contemporary concerns. By imposing its "universal" codes and standards, the West relegated the unmanifest to the bottom of its heap. However, ... Gravitating around theatrical mixed media large-scale compositions, Pets, Parties and a Cuddle also features a number of mid-size portraits and a selection of works on paper. Drawing on her rich visual lexicon, Emefieles new body of works further challenges the historically held vision of women as figures of beauty encapsulating a standardized male desire. Young, fiercely proud, self-assured female characters are the sole protagonists of her compositions. Their unconcerned postures reveal an aversion to conventional conformism and their demeanors and outfits in no way are attempting to lure the male gaze, rather embodying an expression of a purely female necessity. Through the depiction of exaggerated heads said to predict ones ... More Lion of Punjab treasure leads Bonhams Islamic and Indian Art sale in London LONDON.- A gold-thread-embroidered, velvet-clad leather quiver and bow holder almost certainly made for Maharajah Ranjit Singh, Lion of the Punjab, is among a wealth of Sikh treasures to be offered at Bonhams Islamic and Indian Art sale in London on Tuesday, 23 October. It is estimated at £80,000-120,000. Archery played an important role in Sikh military culture. Long after bows and arrows were superseded by more modern weaponry, they retained a ceremonial and symbolic significance, especially among the nobility who would appear in public wearing an embroidered quiver at their side. It is believed that the Maharajah commissioned a quiver in 1838 to wear at the wedding of his eldest son and heir Kharak; and he appears to be wearing the one in the sale or one extremely similar to it in a painting of the same year by the French artist Alfred de Dreaux, ...
