The Peabody Museum at Harvard University said on Thursday that it would return a collection of hair samples that were taken in the early 1930s from hundreds of Native American children who were forced to attend government-run boarding schools. (National Archives via The New York Times) by Christine Chung NEW YORK, NY.- The Peabody Museum at Harvard University said Thursday that it would return a collection of hair samples that were taken in the early 1930s from hundreds of Native American children who were forced to attend government-run boarding schools. The museum apologized for its decadeslong ownership of the samples, which were taken from about 700 students spanning about 300 tribal nations, and said it would try to return the clippings to living relatives and the tribes that the students belonged to. The Peabody Museum apologizes to Indigenous families, communities and tribal nations for our complicity in the objectification of Native peoples and for our more than 80-year possession of hair taken from their relatives, the museum said in a statement, adding that it acknowledged the cultural and spiritual significance of hair and the harm its removal had caused. Self-taught art has enjoyed many periods of prominence, during which endless numbers of makers have emerged. This compelling art seems to be enjoying yet another comeback as collectors look to expressions that convey genuineness and even grace. No one auction could completely cover its wide frontier, but Slotin Folk Art Auctions Fall Self-Taught Art Masterpiece Sale presents a wide-ranging exploration of the folk art fields early days running all the way up to today. The 856-lot auction on November 12-13 is especially well-grounded in classics such as a silhouetted drawing of a dog by much-sought Alabama street artist Bill Traylor (1854-1949) and a memory painting of a fishing schooner on the Grand Banks by Marblehead, ... Photography by Daniel Kukla. NEW YORK, NY.- Raphael Navots "On the Same Subject", his first solo gallery exhibition, is currently on view at Friedman Benda. "On the Same Subject" marks the culmination of an ongoing four-year collaboration with the gallery and serves as a commentary on Navots own evolution as a designer. A polymath designer acclaimed for his retail and hospitality spaces and private residences, Navot references his own daily drawing practice to liberate himself from preconceived expectations. Free to question every step and choice in the creative process, Navot uses this opportunity to reflect on the rigorous journey from first concept to realized physical work. By forgetting the destination and reversing the method, youre leaving the intention to navigate around the many facets of the same subject, he states. PASADENA, CALIF.- SC Pacific Asia Museum presents 開花結果 Open Flowers Bear Fruit, an exhibition featuring ten photographs from Stephanie Shihs ongoing series Asian American Still Life. Through her references to 17th-century Dutch still life paintings, Shihs visually rich and detailed photographs remind viewers of the complex history of objects and food. Upon viewing the photographs, visitors may contemplate reaching through the surface of the paper to grab ahold of a donut or a bite of mochi. However, the richest reward of spending time with Shihs series is to consider the complexity of the Asian American experience as it has manifested in the foods we eat and the things that remind us of home. Shihs passion for telling Asian American stories through her selection of objects and foods is particularly compelling, as is her specific interest in collaborating ... More |

NEW YORK, NY.- P·P·O·W is now presenting "Purple Mountain", Allison Schulnik's second solo exhibition with the gallery. Known for her uncanny approach to traversing the internal and immaterial terrains of nostalgia, memories, and dreams, "Purple Mountain" blurs the line between reality and fantasy to create a mystical portrait of home and motherhood within the stark desert landscape of Southern California. Born out of the seclusion of COVID, the challenges of living in a growingly inhospitable desert terrain, and experiences of deep personal loss, Schulniks new series of paintings, works on paper, and animated film reflects a coalescing of worlds where fear, mortality, and loss are met equally with resilience, interconnectedness, and the spiritual power of the natural world. Hovering on the edge of the symbolic, the wildlife populating "Purple Mountain" is both real and imagined. In a series dedicated to the feline ... DALLAS, TEXAS.- Assemblage from Vikings legend Bill "Boom Boom" Brown pairs with son-in-law's career-spanning collection at Heritage. Rich Gannon collects things. Not football things, because the one-time most valuable player in the National Football League has plenty of those things: the game-worn jerseys and helmets and cleats, the playbooks, the game balls and other keepsakes accrued during a 17-year career that included one trip to the Super Bowl and four to the Pro Bowl. Instead, he collects antique advertising material: "neon signs, Coke signs, porcelain signs." And, as a collector, he knows well the reluctance the resistance that comes with parting with a piece. "If you're a collector, it's in your blood," says the man who suited up as a Minnesota Viking, a Washington Redskin and a Kansas City Chief before finding success and stardom as an ... Behind a housing complex, a meteorite in cast iron has struck down.
