PHILADELPHIA, PA.- On February 27, Freemanss sold a rare work by the Master of the Embroidered Foliage for an impressive $2,470,000, setting a new world auction record for such a work. One of only 10 works attributed to the Master, the Nursing Madonna generated a great deal of inquiries from around the world. It led to a spirited competition between eighteen telephone bidders from Australia, Italy, France, Germany, Russia, Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom and America, as well as several collectors in the room and online. NEW YORK (AFP).- Andre Previn -- the multifaceted musician whose work ranged from composing Oscar-winning film scores to playing jazz piano to conducting the world's elite orchestras -- died Thursday, his management agency said. He was 89. Rare casting of Rodin's seminal 'Age of Bronze' is top lot at Bonhams
LONDON.- A bronze cast of one of Rodins most famous sculptures, LAge dairain (The Age of Bronze), sold for £260,750 at Bonhams Impressionist and Modern Art Sale in London today (28 February). It had an estimate of £100,000-150,000. Conceived between 1875-1877, L Age dairain caused great controversy when it was first shown. The figure was so intensely realistic that critics initially refused to believe Rodin had not simply made a cast of his model. The version of L Age dairain in the sale was cast between 1935-1945 by the Alexis Rudier Foundry in Paris and had resided in a private collection for generations. Swiss luthier striving to make a 21st-century Stradivarius
LYON (AFP).- Meet the man who is trying to make the closest thing you will get to a 21st-century Stradivarius. Award-winning Swiss luthier David Leonard Wiedmer has set himself the task of reproducing the legendary Italian violin at his workshop tucked away in a quayside in Lyon, southeast France. Working from the details of one of the most famous Stradivarius violins, Wiedmer told AFP: "This is the first time I'm making this model so I'm looking forward to hearing how it sounds.
