BERLIN.- The Siglo de Oro the Golden Age of Spanish art remains one of the most important chapters in European cultural history. Prominent painters of the era such as Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Diego Velázquez and Francisco de Zurbaran belong to the ranks of the greatest masters of art history just as much as do the sculptors Gregorio Fernández, Pedro de Mena and Juan MartÃnez Montañés. STOCKHOLM.- Thanks to a generous donation, Nationalmuseum has been successful in its bid to purchase and repatriate four woven tapestries manufactured at Beauvais. Commissioned in 1695 by Carl Piper for his residence in Stockholms old town, the wall hangings are still in fabulous condition after spending over a century in Denmark and the United States. Carl Piper (16471716) was a prime example of the commoners who rose through the ranks of the government bureaucracy during the reign of Karl XI, supplanting the old aristocracy. Piper was ennobled in 1678 and made a baron and a count in 1697. Seven years later he married Kristina Törne (16731752), the daughter of his stepbrother. In 1692, as a gift from his father-in-law, Piper received a large property in Gamla stan, Stockholms old town, which is now known as Petersenska huset. GENEVA.- Gagosian Gallery is presenting "Zoology," Carsten Höller's first exhibition in Geneva. Trained as a scientist, Höller both echoes and surpasses scientific procedures in his work as an artist. Many of his projects invite viewer participation in order to question the facts and forms of human life. From carousels that reflect and disorient, to winding slippery slides, to vision-flipping goggles, Höller actively interrogates the functions of logic, perception, and entertainment in the larger biosphere. "Zoology" is a selection of Höller's recent sculptures, photographs, and prints, made between 2008 and 2016, which consider how different forms of animal life might relate to human embodied awareness. LONDON.- Art Fund and Royal Museums Greenwich announced today that the appeal to save the iconic Armada Portrait of Elizabeth I for the museum has brought in an extraordinary £1.3 million from over 7,000 donations by the public and a match fund contributed by private donors, as well as grants from charitable trusts, in just one month. This makes it one of the most successful Art Fund appeals ever, as fast and as popular as the Save Wedgwood appeal in 2014. For the Armada campaign, the public has been digging deeper than ever before, with an average donation of £82. Encouraged by the groundswell of public support, major donors have responded generously to extend the match fund and encourage more people to contribute. Every donation is matched pound for pound. Seattle art collector gifts notable Northwest Collection to Tacoma Art Museum
TACOMA, WA.- Tacoma Art Museum has received a major promised gift from Seattle art collector Vasiliki Dwyer on behalf of her family and late husband William Dwyer, whose work as a federal judge had broad impact in the Pacific Northwest.
