Immerse yourself in London’s art scene this spring

Last week’s balmy weather has well and truly banished any of our lingering winter-hibernation instincts here at Londonist. And not a moment too soon — because there’s bounty of excellent-looking exhibitions opening at museums and galleries all over London.

Our art critic has been exploring a bunch of them, in between chatting to the curators of Leighton House and dabbling in Madrid’s art scene. He’s also interviewed a range of artists inspired by London, as part of an ongoing series on Londonist: Urban Palette. These include Yanko Tihov, who has created passport collages of the capital using census data; Gail Brodholt, who depicts the dynamism of London through linocut prints; and painter/etcher Jason Hicklin, who captures London's skyline and its weather in black and white.

Both our website and Londonist: Urban Palette have lots more arty content for you to explore. Some pieces on our community for art lovers are paywalled — if you fancy it, you can upgrade your subscription here.

Beyond the Barnes White Rabbit

Conceptual performance artist Spike Mclarrity — who you might know better as the Barnes White Rabbit — has spent years building up a collection of hybrid animal characters. From 24 March-3 April, you’re invited to discover them at a free exhibition at Kingston’s Penny School Gallery examining sexuality, spirituality, cultural identity and gender. It’s open 10am-5pm, Monday-Friday, and 10am-1pm Saturday.
