Poverty, air pollution tied to cancer rates in Tulane study
with Kelly P. Kissel | Metro editorWe're well onto the downhill side, heading into the weekend. Let's take a look at the news in the Baton Rouge area: It's said people are known by the company they keep. Is it true of cities and, if so, is Baton Rouge on a list it doesn't want to be on? The federal government intends to help combat violent crime in 15 cities, and Louisiana's capital is among them. Of the cities on the list, Baton Rouge is the second-smallest, yet has one of this year's highest homicide rates. The flap over whether a paintball business in Livingston Parish could reopen is over for now, with a resounding "No" from the Parish Council. No one would second a motion to let the Guerrilla Warfare Paintball operation resume games. The parish shut it down after fielding complaints from neighbors. And four people have been arrested in connection with the brazen shooting of two people at the Siegen Lane IHOP last month. A 17-year-old boy is accused of being one of two shooters. Thanks for checking in. Have an enjoyable weekend. |
