| Times Past On this day in 1964, The Canberra Times was reporting on the exciting news of new coins to begin circulation. The new decimal coins were set to come into use in 1966 and would consist of one cent, two cent, five cent, 10 cent, 20 cent and 50 cent coins. Each coin would feature an Australian animal on the back, designed and drawn by young Melbourne artist, Stuart Devlin. On the front side of the coin would be the year and the Queen's effigy.
