BY MATTHEW ALBRIGHT | Staff writer Charter schools are public schools — they are not allowed to charge tuition because they receive taxpayer money to operate. But auditors say the state's second-largest charter school network is breaking that rule in a series of "learning pods" throughout the state that use a mix of in-person and virtual instruction. The network argues it's just offering extra services for fees, and claims any student whose parents don't pay will get the basic education required by state law. Here's a look inside the controversy. Should the Louisiana Republican Party endorse a candidate for governor? Eddie Rispone, the megadonor and party's previous candidate for governor thinks it should back Jeff Landry, so they can "start organizing ourselves around the state and ensure the election of a strong conservative governor." But other Republicans with their eyes on the job are crying foul, saying it should be up to voters to decide who the candidate is. Here's a look at the debate. At the height of Huey Long's political powers, one of the places he held court was the Heidelberg Hotel and its neighbor, the King Hotel. As he cut the countless deals that made him famous and infamous, the Kingfish would move back and forth between the two buildings via a secret tunnel. The Hilton that now occupies the space is reopening the tunnel to the public. Here's a view inside its fascinating history. |
