Apple has canceled its electric-car project, report claims
| The company is expected to redeploy some of its workers to projects involving generative AI | Apple has abandoned its efforts to build an electric car, according to a Bloomberg report on Tuesday that cited people with knowledge of the matter. The tech giant has been working on the ambitious project for about the last 10 years, though it never spoke publicly about it during that time. News of the decision to wind down efforts on the so-called “Apple Car” was delivered by key executives to the 2,000 or so people working on it, Bloomberg said. It's not clear why Apple has made the decision, though constantly changing design plans, issues finding a manufacturer, spiraling development costs, and a cooling electric-vehicle market may have all played a part ... | |

Next-gen optical disc can store over 14,000 4K movies
| New technology developed by scientists at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology delivers 4,000 times as much data density as a Blu-ray disc | Scientists in China have developed a new “3D nanoscale optical disc” that’s the same size and shape as a DVD or Blu-ray disc, yet it can hold an astonishing 1.6 petabits of data, IEEE Spectrum reported. That’s equal to about 200,000 GB, or roughly the amount of space that 14,285 2-hour-long 4K movies would require, assuming each movie was 14 GB in size. Instead of writing data on a single layer, the system uses 100 layers. The individual “spots” of data are also far smaller than on conventional Blu-rays or DVDs. Per IEEE's report, “The data is recorded using spots as small as 54 nanometers wide, roughly a tenth of the size of the wavelengths of visible light used to read and write the data" ... | |

Shōgun review: 2024’s first great show is an epic, Game of Thrones-style drama
| 'FX's Shōgun is a densely plotted, frequently astonishing historical drama' | Shōgun is a fascinating thing. An adaptation of James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, which was previously adapted into a TV miniseries starring legendary Japanese movie star Toshiro Mifune in 1980, FX’s latest offering is an entrancing blend of older and modern influences. Narratively and financially, the series is built with the same sturdiness and sweeping scope as the kind of grand cinematic epics that Hollywood was once known for. At the same time, Shōgun is expensive, violent, and occasionally erotic in ways that have only become truly possible on television in our current, post-Game of Thrones world. In less careful hands, Shōgun could have been a mess. But what has arrived on our television screens is a frequently astonishing historical drama ... | |
