Yesterday was a big deal in the tech world. Apple put on a flashy show outlining new products set to be released just in time for this year’s holiday gift-giving.

Even if you’re not an Apple fan, you need to know what’s coming. No, I’m not going to link to a vid for you to watch. I sat through it for you … two hours, six minutes and 11 seconds (not that I was counting).

Doubling down on AR

Apple hasn't really introduced a new product for 10 years. That was the Apple Watch. It made up for this lack of innovation with its new augmented reality (AR) goggles, "Vision Pro."

Instead of clumsy Oculus-type headsets, Vision Pro looks like a scuba mask. The front can be transparent so you can see the outside world. Or, if you’re working confidentially, it turns reflective like a mirror. Yes, you can play video games. But for $3,500, it'd better be for more than just games.

Vision Pro will completely replace your TV and video monitor. Apps, documents, videos, movies and anything you’d see on a screen appear suspended in front of you. Your eyes, hands and voice replace your mouse. It’s made to fit different face shapes and sizes. It’ll be out in about six months.

My cynical husband came into my office and said, “I never want any new tech, but I really want those Apple glasses.” I was so tempted to tell him that’s never going to happen.

iOS 17 brings back call screening

If you’re new to Apple-land, iOS is the software that runs the iPhone. We’ll get the latest version, iOS 17, in mid-September. Your iPad and Apple Watch run their own iOS versions.

A lot of people watching the Apple show were excited by this trick. Soon, you’ll get a voicemail transcription in real time and decide whether or not to answer the phone. Well, I can’t remember the last time I left someone a voicemail. If the person doesn’t answer, I text them.

Seconds matter: A woman died after the person attempting to save her life was forced to watch 18 seconds of ads on a YouTube CPR tutorial. YouTube is running up to 3 minutes of ads on first aid videos, and some are only skippable after 30 seconds. Unbelievable. Forget vids. Take a CPR Class.

📺 Live from … Mars: The European Space Agency marks 20 years of the Mars Express with a live look at what’s going down on the Red Planet. It takes up to 22 minutes for us to get “live” pictures of Mars down here on Earth, so it’s not technically a live stream, but still pretty dang cool. See it here.

Hackers ruin everything: Gmail’s blue checkmarks should mean the email comes from a trustworthy source. I paid $5,000 to get my company’s blue Gmail checkmark. Hackers are exploiting a security flaw that can fool Gmail’s security system. So, if you see a blue checkmark with a spam email, it’s still spam.

Google at work: You might be one of 9 million organizations with beta access to Google’s passkey. Use your phone or computer’s fingerprint or face scanner to log in instead of typing a long, complex, hard-to-remember password. Cue the Hallelujah Chorus.

When I think “embarrassing searches,” they’re not … those kinds. They’re the ones where I’m trying to figure out how to spell a word I definitely should know how to spell. I’m not alone. We all use search engines as a dictionary these days.

But which words are the hardest to spell? The folks at Unscramble Words (a Scrabble cheater/helper site) looked at a year of Google Search data to spill the beans.

Do you struggle with any of these?

Words I’m surprised didn’t make the top 10:

😳 Speaking of misspellings … Google was originally intended to be spelled "Googol," a mathematical term for 10 raised to the power of 100.

The person filling out the domain registration paperwork misspelled the name. But the founders decided to stick with the mistake. I mean, at least it wasn’t a typo on a tombstone. That’s a grave mistake.

Ah, the dreaded “Storage full” notification. When the iPhone debuted in 2007, it only had 4GB of storage (that’s only about 1,300 photos!). We have much more storage space now, but you can still run out.

👊 iOS and Android pro tip: Streaming apps on your phone like Netflix, Hulu and Prime Video let you download movies and shows for offline viewing. Major space hogs! They’re easy to clear.

Let’s say you have downloads on Netflix. Open the app and tap Downloads on the bottom right. From there, you can find and delete them.
