Good morning Valued Subscriber,
As the ANU gets ready for its inevitable job cuts, the vice-chancellor has revealed she's taken a pay cut and has urged staff to forgo their December pay rise to save jobs. Sarah Lansdown reports Professor Genevieve Bell has told university staff she would reduce her own salary by 10 per cent, effective immediately. Fresh from promising to crack down on debit card surcharges, the federal government is going after more cost-of-living gripes. Brittney Levinson reports the government has committed to banning "dodgy practices" like subscription traps, drip pricing, where fees are added throughout the purchase process, and dynamic pricing, where the price of a product changes based on demand. On the surcharges, Brittney explains why the government is going after them, while Steve Evans spoke to shopkeepers and customers about the practice. One customer, the perfectly named Money Money, told Steve she hates the charges and won't use shops that apply the charges. A man yelling while holding a baseball bat wanted "to take a little bit of action in trying to scare" the teenage bully of his step son, Hannah Neale reports. The enraged father showed up at the boy's home in a "threatening encounter", a magistrate has said.
Today will be a cloudy one with a slight chance of a shower and a top of 19 degrees.
