The Advocate's Top Headlines

with Matthew Albright | Assistant metro editor

Good morning. Here are some of our most compelling stories from yesterday, all in one place.

"You're going to kill us with the vaccine"

Louisiana's top health official was confronted by a throng of "anti-vax" and "anti-mask" people in a hearing at the State Capitol on Monday. Members of the audience repeatedly disrupted the hearing — particularly at the start, when they were asked to wear masks.

This story looks at the uproar, and breaks down the misinformation many of the protesters raised during the hearing.

Veterans react to Afghanistan chaos

Louisiana veterans who served in Afghanistan have been watching the United States' withdrawal — which has caused enormous chaos in recent days as the Taliban swiftly retakes the country — with strong and mixed emotions.

On the one hand, many are grateful that America's longest war is ending. But on the other, many also feel that it might have all been for nothing, and some feel the exit has been bungled.

We talked to some of those veterans to get their thoughts, which you can read here.

Online college from the mental hospital?

Jack Jordan is in a state mental hospital, having been found not guilty by reason of insanity. In 2019, police say he intentionally crashed his truck into a woman's car on Siegen Lane, killing her, and later told officers God had told him to do it.

Jordan's lawyer is trying to work out an arrangement where he can take LSU online classes from the hospital. This story looks at the arguments and logistics for services defendants like Jordan get in court-ordered confinement.

Thanks for reading, and have a great day.
